Alright...I know it's illegal to use a copyrighted image, but what if one recreates, from scratch, an almost perfect replica of a copyrighted image. Is that legal? It's an issue of intellectual property I think because it was the original creator's idea. Anyone know?

Depends on how you exploit it I think. If it's pure coincedence, the creator of the image who holds the copyright can ask you to remove it from wherever you are using it. The thing is, if they hold the copyright, you can't really "prove" that you made it up and had never seen thiers. I don't mean if you recreate it by accident...definitely on purpose. For example, one sig customer of mine wanted a picture of the playboy bunny logo in his sig. I looked at a picture of it, and I drew it. I didn't trace it, I just used the picture for reference. Is that alright?
