Roald Dahl---lamb to the slaughter

In his short story (which I have read for class), I my teacher said that I had to find out what the author was trying to point out to us from this story, (ie cruelty, starvation of societys).....I think it would be cruelty to people in Korea, or it could possibly be from the hit England took from the Wars, and be from the lack of food.

My teacher hinted that it was something that was happening in england in the 1950s-60s.

Thanks for all the help :)

Edit- I think that it would be about the Post-war period, and how people wanted more freedom(him leaving)[and also hinting at the de-rationing of food from post-war times].....anyone approve/disprove this method.

Good story. I even remember it from grade nine when I read it for school. I don't know much about England though, sorry :(
