Are nested quotes necessary?

Featured Replies

It's been cropping up a lot, especially in the Off Topic board where there is quite a bit of debating happening a lot of the time.

The problem is that when people quote a post to reply to it, they don't necessarily need to quote previous posts.

Here's the example:

A lot of the time, posters quote only to reply to one post. However, when said post also quotes others which then quote other posts, threads are cluttered unnecessarily.

I've seen other boards disable nested quoting by default, instead limiting the quoted post to the original one, minus any others. That saves a lot of space and hassle when quoting one post to debate points, because most of the time, you have to delete all the irrelevant junk because you don't want to create more clutter yourself.

Last time we tried that... this was the result...

blah blah blah, yakka yakka yakka

If you tried to quote the above, all you'd get in your reply is:
hmph
It essentially got rid of everything except for the text after the last quote :uhh:

When it's fixed, I'm all for removing nested quotes.
