Don't train Strength with a Whip, it's to slow.

The best Wep for training Str is a Dragon Scimmy, but since the quest is so hard, most people use a Dragon Long.

If you have the money i believe str training with dharocks is pretty good. You could also just grab a Dragon scimmy/Baxe/long (whichever you prefer) and just start training with it. For what to train on, PC is the best if you can get into a good group. As monsters go rock crabs and experiments are the best exp. You could also try out minotaurs at the SOS, they drop a ton of iron arrows that you could use to train range later.
