I havent played Runescape in about 2-3 years. Back then I had been working on leveling my smithing and I was making cannonballs as they sold rather well. Do people still grind out smithing xp on balls or is there another item that is preferable to smith at this time? Also, what do cannonballs sell for now?

Cannonballs are still one of the best ways to get smithing exp, though I know several people who swear by iron knives. They go for anywhere from 150-200 each (around 180 now I think) so it's a good profit.

cannon balls are slow xp :S bt good money - well iron knives are good because u wont actually make losses - but if ure just looking for xp not cash .. you should make steel plates - good xp but alot of loss -
