I could not help but smile to myself - As Gielinor grows, so have I. Since my birth in this world, I have gone by many names, and eventually I become known as Primadog. I made my first sail into Gielinor under the name of Santa91754, a mesh-mish of what I aspire to be and where I was once from. The world was small then, in its infancy. That was five years ago. After a few moons, my first life in Gielinor, as Santa91754, came to an end. Life in another world called, and I parted way with this world. Santa91754 was a smith whom dream of using his craft to benefit the younger and spread kindness. Before he left the world, he traveled long and wide, eventually to tip.it, made many friends, memories, experiences. He even stumbled into the realm of ArenaScape for a period of time, contributing what little he knew and left a small mark in that world. Eventually, I returned. Decided to start anew and determined to live in humility, I chosen the name of newbiei. That was two Winters ago. NewbieI blossomed. Through his travels, he transversed jungles, slain dragons, searched the depth of the earth, and amassed experiences and memories in this world. He's skilled in all trades, but found the deepest satisfaction in the crafts and magic. More importantly, he meet many friends with whom he shares happy memories with. Nowaday, you can still find NewbieI wandering around Gielinor adventuring, training, making a fool of himself. You can also find Primadog trolling around the tipit chat and forum. You might even find some of his bizzard creations wandering aimlessly ( such as RaffleBot in #runescape). Wherever you find him, please drop him a greeting! In my hand, there was a crumbled paper with an address I can't deciper. I got frustrated and tried to ask for help, but it seems no one's interested. Everyone seem to notice my accent, clothing, and know I'm a snotty foreigner. Just when i am about to give up, I heard someone call my name, I look up -- it's an old friend of mine. From so long ago, yet he still remember me! He said I am not too far away and he had some free time, so he will walk me home. We chatted and strolled, and it's like old time again. We wandered through our old school, the open market, the streets, development area, the water dam -- everything look so familiar, it's like I went back into another time. Eventually it was night and he said to me, "let's go home." He walked me back through all these all-so familiar areas, its late now, and I can't help but shack the feeling that everything looks older and crumbling under a heavy layer of dust. Eventually, we walked underneath a construction tunnel, the soil was an ugly yellow. After minutes we saw a tiny window - probably a maintaines opening. "This is where I live, ain't it great? Open air, no one to yell at you?" So i realized that he ran away from home a long time ago. He told me he's sleepy and waved me the direction towards my aunt's house. I said my goodbye and thanks, remembering the way back so I can bring him a blanket tommorow. I returned to my vacation and soon forgotten about that first day. Just before I am to fly away, I suddenly pass the water dam, the construction tunnel -- this is where he lives. I circled the tunnel and can't seem to find that entrance he showed me, and finally a passby told me, "This tunnel collapsed a long time ago." ~Nov 23, 06~ ~Problem: Hunting as of now does not link well with other skills~ Solution: Make the items collected usable for other skills. One of RuneScape's most unique attribute as a MMO is there's no set path for your skills. You can choose to be a crafter one day and a slayer the next. Morever, the more diverse skills you have, the more useful stuff you can make. There are many player-made goods that utilize two, three, or more skills to complete, for example: iron + coal ore -> steel bar -> steel arrowhead -> (1) log -> arrow shaft (2) chicken feather + (1) + (2) -> steel arrow As shown above, even the making a simple arrow requires the use of FIVE skills to complete. This is call synergy. All the previous skills have been designed with synergy in mind, however, this synergy is lacking in the newest skill: Hunting. This is a brief list of raw material created by Hunting: various raw meats various colored feathers various animal hides butterflies new weapons, armor misc for bolts, etc. At first glance, it appears that Hunting is designed to synergize with cooking, fishing, fletching, and combat. However, both raw meat and feathers have previously established sources that's easier to collect from (chicken and fish ), more useful, and provide better exp. The new feathers can be used to fish new rainbow fish, but the rainbow fish is both slower than and heals less than lobster. The new bolt and animal hides appears useful for fletching and crafting exp, but neither can be player-made. The only way to create the new bolt and hide-armor is throw the shops. Because of this, every hunting ground we went, the ground is littered with raw webbit meat, feather, lion hides, claws, and teeth. No one find a use for them, so no one keeps them. Essentially, none of products of Hunting interact with any other skill -- there's no SYNERGY To alleviate this, I suggest the following: animal bone -> sharpened animal bone -> (3) lizard spine -> dried lizard spine -> (4) ore -> bar -> crossbow shaft + (3) + (4) -> Hunter Bow (and upgrades) claw, teeth -> sharpened claw, teeth + (3) + color feather -> Hunter bolts claws and new bone can be sharpened animal hide -> dried animal hide -> hunter camo butterfly -> fed with herb -> enchanted butterfly + battlestaff -> enchanted battlestaff This list is in no way exclusive, but compare it to the lack of skill synergy in Hunting at this moment, we can see that there's enormous room for improvement in Hunting. In many respect, similar to the pixel art renaissance few year prior. I believe as the most prominent fansite of RuneScape, we have a responsibility to encourage and nourish such development. The following is my suggestion to do so: 1) Creating a archive/database for runescape themed creative art in the tipit homepage. The archive will I. create a permanent list of links and archival information for the created art similar similar in format to http://imdb.com/ II. Develop a ranking/voting system to rank such a list (ex http://www.newgrounds.com ) 2) Create a forum or forum groups with the goal to encourage the development of creative groups and their work. I. A new general discussion forum for new work announcement, discussion, advertisement II. A new recruitment forum for projects recruitments III. A new blog forum for artists to discuss their projects-in-development 3) Use Tipit Time as a venue to showcase new projects, critic 4) Create monthly contests, themes to encourage development of new RS film, comic, art, etc. I believe doing so will not only recognize the new developing genre of RS ART but accelerate its development. In return, it'll decrease our reliance on the creativity of Jagex for our community's energy. The RS ART movement needs a Mecca, and Tipit should fulfill this need. ~Mar 1, 07~ ~On Why I Value the life in RuneScape~ I play because RuneScape is one of those few constants in life. I started near the start of the game and had quit, returned, and quit again. Summers and Springs passed, purberty, high school, love, college, snow; life keep changing, progressing, evolving, sometimes to the point where I wonder will I ever able to stop playing "catch-up" with rest of the world. In those times, I turned to RuneScape, for it's always there, it's comforting. Sure, there'll be a patch or two, new worlds open up, new players, new areas and monsters and quests, but the gameplay remains ever so familiar; the cities and streets are still there - Varrock, Falador, O' River Lum. It's a sense of home-coming, returning to the old world where the changes are mild and predictable. Who is to judge that our experience in this game values any less than experiences else where? The life lessons are still life lessons, the happiness are still happiness, the pain still pain, the accomplishments still accomplishments. Ultimately, we're still interacting with other people and growing with them, just on a different platform. ~Mar 4, 07~ ~On Defense of Quests~ Perhaps you do not enjoy quests and only do them for the rewards, other people (such as I do). I enjoy the uniqueness of each quest, for the plot, creativity, challenges, and puzzles. It make you glad that you're not playing WoW or other games where all quests involve the format: kill/gather # [insert monster/item here] and return for exp. The quests actually pertain and expand the RS storyline, and it's vital to the game experience. Contrary to the claims that the recent quests are "shallow," "boring," or "weak," I believe there's a general trend of improvement in the quest's creativity, humor, style, detail. Don't forget, our first quest into this world IS bringing 20 balls of wool for a farmer (+4 qp). I died twice in Contact, barely lived through the hail of snow from the ice trolls, and that's just this year. Of course, if you don't like quests, period. Smile So please, visit famecast.com, listen to robbie hazen and vote for him! ~Mar 17, 2007~ ~Irony~ It's strange, the more I attempt to separate real life and runescape, then more it tangles together. When I play this game, I made a conscience effort to present newbiei as a person different than myself. In a sense, I felt that this character of mine should be a role play, not simply a different platform for my mind. In the end, however, this is still the same mind for the ingame character as well as the real-life character, and both suffers though the same weakness - regardless of how I ignore or will it. In the past week, I been busying myself with Builtom to attempt a different project, the Player-made quest The Spoils of War. We knew the planning would be difficult, we knew that allot of resources, manpower, and luck are involved, but we tried to work it out regardless. After spending most of the week, we though we have a finished product, and we have did our best to polish it -- the only thing that's left is luck. Just then, I broke down, all the chance involved and the possibility of failure overcame me, overwhelmed me. On the day before the event, I suddenly stopped everything and simply left a line "postponed" without explanation. I came to runescape because it's simple. There's no responsibility, nobody that counts on your actions. You are free to do what you like and drop what you don't, no one is dependent on you and no pressure to succeed. Eventually, responsibility will still catch up, and I still have to face it. Just like in real life, I faltered and broke down again. Same soul, different places, same result.
