^This, iirc Ghost isn't even supereffective to Psychic in Gen I, plus there are very few bug type moves. [hide=part 2] After a crushing victory against Roxanne, I received the TM, Rock Tomb. I decided to save it for now. Heading east, I encountered a Nincada in the tall grass, naming it Jack. I also leveled up Sasha quite a bit. Spike is still hopeless, and is only level 5 despite my efforts to train him without dying. I learned that Izzy has the Pickup ability, and I got a super potion! I made my way to Rusturf tunnel, and encountered a Whismur. Sasha and Spike, in an attempt to weaken Whismur, nearly died. My heart was beating very rapidly, turn between deciding to kill it quickly with Geico who was too strong to simply weaken it, or risk the lives of my friends. Luckly I had a potion, and with one quick attack, Sasha had done it! I threw a pokeball and Siren the Whismur was mine. I fought another Aqua Grunt, and rescued an old man's wingull, along with the Devon Goods. After going to Devon Corporation, the President gave me the pokenav, and tasked me to go to Dewford. I stocked up on supplies, and headed down to Mr. Briney's cottage. Now that I had Cut, I could take the alternate route, and I got the Miracle Seed. I gave it to Geico to hold. Now he was unstoppable! I found a Slakoth on my way back, but was sad that I couldn't catch it. I grinded Siren to level 10 on some wild pokemon, and then got Spike to level 6. I encountered a wild Slakoth, level 5. Spike was at full health, and I decided to stop switch-training because it could handle a pokemon that did nothing 1/2 the time. After getting Slakoth to a sliver of HP however, Slakoth delivered a critical hit Scratch, taking away Spike's last 10 HP. To be honest, I didn't really care, Spike sucked. Nonetheless, Jack, who hadn't seen any action yet, finished off Slakoth. I got to Briney's, and set sail for Dewford. I deposited Spike into the PC, into a box labeled 'Memorial.' After obtaining the Old Rod from a fisherman, I headed north, and battled a few fisherman there. I entered the Cave, and got HM05, Flash. I taught Flash to Jack, and then I encountered a wild Geodude and caught it, naming it Rocky. I headed back to the town, and prepared for the Gym battle. I decided Rocky, who would never be able to evolve into a Golem, was a waste of training effort, and I put him in my PC. I got the Silk Scarf, which I gave to Siren, and then entered the Gym. After Sasha fought the first 3 trainers solo, thanks to Wing Attack, he got to level 16. I didn't know if my pokemon were healed enough, but what choice did I have? I saved and enganged in battle with Brawly. He sent out a level 17 Machop. Sasha, with amazing luck, got a critical hit! Machop went down, and all that was left was a pesky Makuhita. It used sand-attack. Go figure. Two Wing Attacks and Makuhita was down as well. Sasha also hit level 17, and I won my second Gym badge! I received Bulk Up, which none of my pokemon could learn, so I just hung on to it. I decided to grind before I healed, and that was the end of Dewford![/hide]

You're looking at it merely as the 500th try though. Yes, the 1st and 500th tries have the same probability, but finding a shiny on the 1st compared to the 2nd-499th does not. To blow it out of proportion, wouldn't 100,000 encounters have a higher probability of finding a shiny than in a single encounter? Edit: I have started my pokemon journey, and I'll write about it. [hide=Part 1] After going through the opening dialogues and naming my character Robert, after myself, I went north to see Birch. I picked Treecko, and named him Geico, after the car insurance company. Afterwards, I went north to route 103 to find May. Luckily, I didn't encounter any wild pokemon on the way (I had no pokeballs.) I beat May, and Geico learned Absorb! This would surely be helpful considering how little I would be healing. After returning to Littleroot Town and obtaining 5 pokeballs, I went north to Oldale, bought some potions and pokeballs, and decided to start catching some allies. In route 103, I met and caught a Poochyena, which I named Spike. West of Oldale, I met a Zigzagoon, but unfortunately killed it. After battling a few trainers, I arrived in Petalburg City. After talking to a few people, I met my Dad and Wally, and showed him how to catch a Ralts. My Dad gave me some advice for becoming stronger, and I was on my way again! I made my way to Route 104, where I encountered another Zigzagoon! I captured it this time and named it Izzy. Heading north to Petalburg Woods, I encountered a Tailow, caught it, and named it Sasha. After battling a few bug catchers, (With some close calls for Geico) I managed to beat the Aqua Grunt, and obtained a Great Ball. Upon exiting the woods, I obtained bullet seed, and taught it to Geico, replacing Pound. I realized at this point how underleveled all of my pokemon besides Geico were. I'd have to fix that. I went up the bridge, and found myself in my first double battle! Sasha took care of the grass type pokemon easily, and I safely made it to Rustboro. I entered one of the houses at random, and got HM01, Cut. I taught it to Izzy, because he's the only one who would get STAB bonus from it. In the Devon Corp.'s housing building, I got a premier ball from an enthusiastic child. I also got the Quick Claw from an old professor in the trainer's school. Now I was ready to beat Roxanne, the rock-type gym leader. Geico made quick work of the first trainer with Bullet Seed, and the second suffered the same fate. I saved, and challenged Roxanne. Her Geodude went down rapidly, and Geico gained a level, to 16! I used bullet seed twice on her Nosepass, but she kept using potions on it, which was frustrating. Eventually, I managed to score a critical, and I had won. Geico evolved into a Grovyle, and I was $1500 richer. End of Part 1. [/hide]

I know what you mean, that the chances don't increase on a singular-scale, but after a thousand or so encounters, you are more likely to have encountered a shiny during ONE of the thousand, as opposed to the very first try specifically.

[hide] The odds of finding a shiny before you can even have pokeballs are so slim I'm tempted to say you're lying :| Again, the chances of finding a shiny pokemon at all are so slim on to themselves everyone is tempted to say they are fake. In my entire pokemon career i only had 5: A shiny magnemite in Gold, a shiny growlithe in silver who rared away. I nerd raged for the following hour. A shiny paras in FR, i was crossing my fnigers for him not to run. he didn't. A shiny Golbat in FR seafoam islands and a shiny pineco in Emerald. Combining all of these, it's all about chance. ALG was both insanely lucky and unlucy at the same time- PS: Shiny Gyarados doesn't count >:[ [/hide]I know, it's 1/8192 I think to find a shiny, but considering all the pokemon encounters one has in a single game, you have decent chances of finding one. To find it on the very first try is astounding though.
