Made my own paint program... (BETA RELEASED!!)
TABLET SUPPORT ADDED for Windows & Linux. Here I am trying it out with my Intuos3. :) Sorry rushrock, I have no idea what the problem is. :( I'll ask around on dev forums and see if I can come up with anything. Chances are you'll have to wait for the applet release.

Do you have any other browsers? If so, would you mind trying them? It may be related to this bug: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bu ... id=6504564

Made my own paint program... (BETA RELEASED!!)
You need Java Web Start to run it. Download the latest version of Java and it should work when you try to run the JNLP. :) http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/ Do you have heavy firewalls or proxies set up? What browser are you using? It might be a bug with Java. I'll try to find a workaround but you might be stuck waiting until the applet release. :( Just started progress on the next version. Here's a screenshot of the new brush system. It supports textures, as you can see with the feathered brush and the splatter brush. :) I've also fixed most of the old version's brush glitches.

Some paintings and an old drawing
I like the first and third the best. :) Nice stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions/bug repots. :) I'm glad people are enjoying V1. I will try for a zoom in/out for my next version. :) You can type the 0 key to set it to 100. This opacity hotkey is more or less copied from PS. I see the problem though, when you type "100" it stays at 10. I'll be sure to fix that in V2. I find it annoying, too. :) The colour chooser is part of the Swing GUI toolkit, so I'm not sure if there is a clean fix to that. However, I was planning on making a custom colour chooser for the next one. What kind of extra options? What do you mean?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. :D a) What do you mean? Copying images from the net and pasting them in? Or something else? B) You should be able to double-click any of the colour boxes to use custom colours. As for the other issues, I'm aware of them and I'll try to sort them out for the next release. Nice strawberry by the way! :)

Rushrock -- JDK 6 is the most recent full release. It's not too old... Can you give me any details on the problem? It may be a bug. I'm using the very same version as you, so I don't think it's something to do with the version. I plan to have an applet version along with my next release, but an applet won't change the security. Java Web Start is equally as secure as a java applet, and they will both give you that "Warning, unsigned certificate" message when you try to run it. I understand your concern, though. :) They've already got Graffiti, which trumps my humble Picto in terms of sheer popularity.

For those of you who wish to beta test, you can run the Java Web Start here: http://www.myjavaserver.com/~davedes/painter/Picto.jnlp Any ideas for a name? I'm planning on making the next release geared purely towards digital painting for beginners.

Yea, the next version will be essentially a rewrite using better practices and more digipaint-friendly features. Heh, not yet, I forgot about that. Shift will "constrain proportions" with shapes, though...

What features would it need? Planned/Current Features: - Support for undo/redo for a configurable number of states (default 20) - Support for saving/loading sketches as a PNG or JPG - 5 different layers for sketching (with visibility on each) - Easy photoshop-like custom colour chooser (soon to be easier) - Tools: - Brush: Smooth, variable size and opacity - Pencil: Harsh, variable size and opacity - Eyedropper: Can be toggled with ALT key - Recording mode, allows you to save your progress and watch it later (like a mini-movie of it drawing itself) - Left/right mouse buttons for foreground/background colours - Tablet support for Windows and Linux Anything else? The ligthweight version would drop the shape and dashed brush tools -- hopefully no complaints! :)

It uses Java2D for graphics, but I built my own "engine" of sorts around J2D to support undo/redo and various painting tools. It follows OO patterns in parts, but the code is still a mess. I'm going to rework the codebase a bit to clean it up and add layering and recording. Some of the people at RSC were suggesting I add some sort of recording mode so that you can save progress and show others how you drew it. Others were suggesting simple layers, something like 5 buttons that you can flip between. I can already see this as being a pretty effective tool for learning digipainting, if I ever get it off its feet.

Sure, if they want to hah. :) I'll include a downloadable version for anyone who's interested in using it offline. Nearly finished the beta. I should have a test up sometime tonight, I hope.

Yep. :)

It's standalone, but no installer required. Java Web Start lets you click and open it without much hassle. :) The project is pretty messy at this point, but the underlying engine (which handles rendering and undo/redo) is very clean and flexible. Maybe I'll clean it all up and provide it as a Java applet (and/or a FF plugin). I'd also make it a bit lighter.. nobody uses the shape tools, anyways. :P

Thanks for the comments. :) But don't get too excited... It's still really basic. Doesn't support zoom, soft brushes or different document sizes (yet). Just Java and the JDK. I used Substance L&F in the screenshot.

Want to beta test? Try out the Java Web Start: http://www.myjavaserver.com/~davedes/painter/Picto.jnlp This week I wrote a simple MS Paint mock for a school assignment. It was programmed in Java. Here's a little something I sketched in it to prove its effectiveness. I'll have a working web start up soon so people can test it out if they like. :)

Your first kiss
Easiest way to learn is to go to parties serving alcohol. Once the tongue is in, just move it around gently. Most of it is just improvising, really... Haha, I totally agree. That's going to be a story to look back on and laugh about. :)

Recently I started heavily exploring God and spirituality. I'm still not set on my beliefs, but I'm peddling with the idea that God is infinite, and is perhaps nothing more than a metaphor for the spiritual connection that exists between all thought-energy in the multiverse. I just started watching Bill Hicks today on YouTube.. Really amazing stuff. :)

Is Social security In USA as bad as "sicko" shows?
I'm also from Canada, and our care doesn't suck. Sure, it's slow as hell, but it's free. If you are desparate for speedy service you can use a private clinic, like MedCan. Ask any Canadian if they would rather the American health care system -- most would say no. Here's a clip of Moore's documentary which he never showed. It's about Norway's way of living... Makes me want to move there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ0B2xDzSgg

Your first kiss
Ironically, I feel prompted to comment that had a male done that to a 13 y.o. female friend, the media would be in a twirl of ecstatic throes. What has the media got to do with anything? :?
