Because, believe it or not, most gay people aren't horny bastards that are just in the military to take showers with other men. If they cause a problem, then kick them out. That's not a problem with their being gay. That's a personal self-control issue. And a small minority of gay people showering with a ton of straight guys is a lot [bleep]ing different then all the men showering with all the women. I was talking about modern America, Tyler. A hundred years from now, most people aren't going to be idiotically afraid of or uncomfortable around gay people, luckily. Just like how 50 years ago we'd be talking about how people would get uncomfortable around black people and that they shouldn't be allowed in the military because it wouldn't make people work together as well. Now no one gives a [bleep]. We just have to let the close-minded people catch up.

It didn't stop gays from joining the military, it just stopped them from being openly gay in the military. And if you don't join because you cant run around telling everyone how fabulous you are, you don't belong in the military anyway. So now when someone does act openly gay, all that's going to happen is that it'll be awkward for everyone else, and they'll probably end up semi-isolated, which is not good. Yeah, but that's not what was happening. People would get discharged for simply stating their sexuality, not "running around being fabulous." The fact that they would get removed for saying that is discrimination. Running around being obnoxious is a problem that both gay and straight people have, and should not be "fixed" with creating Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Where the [bleep] did I imply that? There are plenty of smart folk in the military, however, it's also an option for kids with little or no academic future.
