  1. The English bashing that's going on here suggests to me that the users of this forum are primarily of the Maths/Science mentality. People seem to be forgetting that, though many works of literature are shallow, there are an enormous array of works that are deeper and, if viewed properly far more pleasurable, than any amount of programming.

The real value of English in terms of education, however, is to teach people to develop the invaluable faculty of critical thinking. The extent to which someone has this ability comes across especially when they comment on the Tip.It Times - the more literal and less critically aware people often misinterpret articles - and by extension someone's critical thinking ability is crucial to their wider interaction and interpretation of all around them.

I'm certainly not of a Maths/Science mentality, although I did enjoy the two. I was always very good at English going through school, I enjoyed the classes. But I didn't like enjoy the "hidden meanings" that the teachers pretend are there. Trying to link them to events, etc. which they aren't related to.

We can do that with anything - pick it apart to such an extent that we are convincing ourselves it was said/phrased in a certain way for a reason... Sorry, but I don't buy it. I never did. It made poetry and others texts tedious and completely destroyed any interest anyone could possible have with it.

  2. I thought the point of English was to make up the author's intent and symbols, even when the author says that there aren't any.

That is essentially it. Sometimes an apple is just an apple. I always argued why we bothered dissecting poetry and trying to apply meaning where there's not supposed to be any. Just because an event happened in a poet/writers life, at the time they wrote a particular poem/novel/short story doesn't indicate that there's a hidden meaning between every line.

I actually have to disagree here. It IS possible to find personal meaning in something, even if the author didn't intend for it to be there. The problem is when the teacher tries to teach what THEY saw, and completely disallows all discussion.

Well certainly, it is all down to personal opinion. And that is the problem. A class of 30 won't get very far if everyone is sharing a different opinion on what the text means. But we can look at any piece of text and decide there's hidden meaning to it. It's a rather foolish way of teaching, in my opinion. There are far better ways to educate, that would be more effective, than throwing several texts and dozens of poems at students and explaining this hidden meaning behind each.

I'm not the kind to beat around the bush. Always "Mr. Negative" when I argued about something (Every poem/story I ever read) - because, as I said, an apple is just an apple. Spinning things to suit ourselves doesn't accomplish anything.

There can always be a case where a traumatic event has happened which lead to something being written, sure. Robert Frost was able to translate real life events and feelings.

I'd nearly say other poets/writers write "Just for lulz" so students decades down the line can bang their heads off a wall while being fed some nonsense their educator thought up.

  4. Down the country with friends two or three years back. A friend that lives down there owns a Citroen Saxo rally car, something like this:

    citroen-saxo-grp-h-5020_2l.jpg

Two seats and a roll cage. Narrow country roads; high speeds. They barely fit two cars on the two lanes. Hearing "If a tractor comes around this corner, consider yourself dead." wasn't really music to my ears.

Nor was it fun going 70MPH+ while he's steering with his knees to write a text.

    Country life.

  5. Thought it would be a good idea to bump this.

    Phats today are diving.

    Blue's under 3B, white's 1.8 or so. Red's 1.3. Green's under 1.1B, Yellow and Purple are ~950M.

Dang, I should have sold a p-hat like I started to a few months ago and bought it back for lower prices. Oh well.

They stopped falling last night. They rocketed down in price, panic-buing ensued and within seconds they were unbuyable for their previous price + a respectable percentage (Green had been 1050 - unbuyable at 1250). Following that was an instant crash to almost their previous prices. They have been slowy rising all day.

  6. First things first - Wtf@This arrow getting in the way of my pirvate messages?! Fix it please. Its a huge pain, its hard to see what im doing. How did such a design flaw make it into the game??!

This is the only major error I've seen in this update. I'm not sure why they tried fixing the old arrows, but at least raise the split-off text so it falls above the new arrows.

    I don't really

  7. As announced last week, and as youve no doubt noticed, our all-new website has launched! Along with a shiny new look, it contains all the important features you use day-to-day. There are a number of exciting new features as well, including:

    - The RuneScape Wiki: The manual has now been moved over to our new, community-editable wiki. Theres a wealth of RuneScape knowledge and experience out there among you, and with this were empowering you to share it with everyone else. Even if youve never used or edited a wiki before, its really easy to do. Follow the link for details of the basic requirements for editing, and for guides on how to get started.

    - The Events Section: Theres a whole new section devoted to the organisation and advertisement of events. The Jagex Community Engagement team, clans and individual members of the community can put up details on the events feed and place a location pin into the events map to direct prospective attendees.

    - RuneScape News to the Fore: News, media and social networking activity feeds have been given pride of place on our new news page, ensuring that up-to-the-minute RuneScape information is readily available at all times.

A full list of improvements weve made would be an essay worthy of Reldo himself, so the best thing to do is to go ahead and explore the new site first hand!

Next up, weve overhauled the top-level interface in full-screen and resizable windowed mode. Its designed to give the game a bold new look and feel, and to promote easier, more fluid interaction with the game world:

    - Icons have been restyled and enlarged.

    - Operation text now appears within the field of play, next to the mouse cursor, when hovering over objects, giving you the important information you need while allowing you to keep your eye on the game. This can be toggled off in the options menu if necessary.

    - Examine text will also be displayed in the field of play.

    - There is a darker gradient behind text in the chat window, to increase legibility.

    - The mini-map and surrounding UI elements have a new, metallic border.

    - The game window has been given a decorative border.

This is just the first batch of interface improvements that we have in store, and we'll be continuing to work hard to improve it. Watch out for this, as well as more graphical and usability changes, in the weeks and months to come!

Captain Turkerton and his rabble-rousing band of dissidents have set up a picket outside the Cooking Guild, lambasting the basting of their comrades as part of a traditional Thanksgiving feast. If the situation escalates further, therell be much more than cranberry sauce spilled. Can you arrange a peaceful, yet wholesome and nutritious, solution?

    Mod Avatar & Mod Rak

    How to start Turkey Protest:

Speak to Captain Turkerton outside the Cooking Guild.

    Requirements:

    - None. Free players and members alike can complete this event.

    - As well as the herald cape crest and emote, which are available to free-to-play players and members alike, members will receive a turkey pet as an additional reward.

    In Other News...

    - Along with the new website comes a re-structured hiscores section, which is now a members-only feature, for the reasons outlined in last weeks post. When a term of membership elapses, there is a 14 day grace period in which the account will remain on the hiscores. After this period, the account will not be shown on the hiscores until it is re-subscribed. Please note that this works from the date of your subscription, not the date of todays update; for example, if your subscription elapsed 10 days ago, you now only have 4 days before your account is no longer displayed.

    - With the launch of the RuneScape wiki, the Quest Help system has been removed from the game.

    - Leprechauns will now store plant cures, up to 255 buckets, 5 scarecrows, and can deposit magic secateurs automatically if equipped. The Herblore Habitat leprechaun will now also store up to 30 of several kinds of vine.

-Several boss respawn rates have been increased.

    - As announced in Mod Marks forum post last week, Faruq's Tools dice have now been completely removed from the game.

Today sees the latest in our series of initiatives to stamp out botting, gold farming and dishonest play in RuneScape.

Its a sad fact that the vast majority of gold farming activity takes place in the free game, where it is possible to create disposable accounts that can be used to generate in-game money and send it on for illicit real-world trade in defiance of our rules. Todays measures will reduce the effectiveness of this practice by a factor of 100, to show these people once and for all that ruining your game is not only unacceptable, but also a waste of their time.

From today onwards, newly created free to play accounts will be subject to a number of trade limitations, consisting of:

New free-to-play accounts can only give away gold coins or items, or make a trade with an imbalance in the recipients favour, to the value of 25000 coins per 24 hours. This limitation also applies to drop trades.

New free-to-play accounts can make Duel Arena bets with no greater imbalance than 25000 coins per 24 hours.

We have also made a change to Wilderness PvP, where noted items will only appear to the original carrier when dropped upon death; not the killer. This affects all accounts not just ones subject to the limitations above.

The last thing we want is to make trading difficult for our long-standing and bustling free-to-play community, so existing free-to-play accounts will be unaffected. Whats more, there is no limit to the value of gifts that can be received by a new free-to-play account, so theres nothing to stop a new player from receiving a helping hand from a high-levelled friend. Needless to say, balanced trades between players are not a problem, either.

The limitations will remain in effect until the affected account purchases membership. Subscribing will remove these restrictions permanently, even if the subscription later ends and is not renewed.

These measures are a decisive next blow in our ongoing battle against botting and gold farming. We are fully committed to stamping out this insidious form of cheating to ensure you the fair game experience that you deserve.

  8. Yes I've been following it from the beginning; it's very enjoyable - although I feel it's a tad slow. A girl I know from Israel is the one who told me of it, and said it's a sort of copy of an Israeli show, apparently a true story. Except the prisoners didn't come home alive. (Something along those lines!)

  9. Breaking Dawn.

A girl invited me so I just went because friends were going to be there and we were going to laugh at the awfulness.

That movie is pure shit. Pure shit. Nothing really happens until the last ten minutes and the acting and dialogue was so awful that I cringed at points. However, there is one hilarious scene where werewolves are talking in human voices. Think of the dogs from UP. I started cracking up in the theater.

Do not see it. Not even the werewolves-talking scene made it worth it.

The worst part was that teenage girls were walking out and calling it "one of the greatest films they've seen".

I'm of the same opinion; rubbish movie. However, I must presume you haven't read the books. Nor have I. But those who I went with had - and to them, it was a good movie. We (Being normal - not reading the books) didn't really get everything that was going on, and will happen in the next movie.

It's received rubbish reviews from critics. Becuase they are reviewing the movie as if it was just that- one movie. If they were to review the book and the movie, I think it would be different. One compliments the other.

  10. So your proof of a government bailout is where?

He never said government. I think he was implying Jagex ran their game into the ground, sold a huge amount of the game to investors, and now they don't care anymore.

That's just my guess as to what he means though.

Direct comparison to US Banks being bailed out (by the government) gives a fairly strong impression otherwise. Especially since investment is hardly a bailout.

No no, you've got this all wrong. This is Tip.It. Jagex were bailed out by the government - that bail out was cloaked as an "Investment" so its customers wouldn't go running. They are evil.

  11. I can still see the thread.

    Over reaction much?

    [qfc]285-286-462-63381407[/qfc]

We get it. You don't like Jagex. Quit preaching, maybe find a game you like.

EDIT: QFC isn't working. Search "The Ultimate Insult 2" on the RSOF.

Well I just did that. It found the ultimate insult with everything hidden, but not the second one. Then I did google, and it found the ultimate insult 2 (moved) and said it was moved to rants, which I thought was funny seeing it doesn't even exist anymore, and then after clicking click here to view thread it just sends you back to the forum home. Can't just someone post screenies or something.

The Rant forum doesn't seem to appear until you login. It's at the bottom of page 4. Login and search the user who created the thread and you'll find it.

  12. The thread itself is now gone from the forums - even though it is posted by a now demodded ken not at all representing jagex in any shape or form.

Way to quash any criticism, soviet jagex.

Honestly, I really do not see how anyone can still have faith in Jagex anymore...they literally treat their playerbase like crap and think that all forms of criticism as trolling. I really envy players from other games these days, where devs actually listen and resoond. I have so rarely seen any business conduct so unethically as jagex. They're no different from the bankers who stole your money and are living in tax bailed out mansions.

Not so originally...jagex go bailed out, players got sold out, there is only profit for those investors and nothing for the players.

    Jagex is dead to me.

The funny thing about it all..is that all this profit now crap from jagex is a horrible business decision. Jagex and runescape has never had worse pr than those today. No new players are coming and more and more are leaving. The game is probably worth less than it was a year ago.

I can still see the thread.

  13. umm whats the point of this thread? these guys are getting demodded for not supporting jagex. if they have a different view of opinion then they shouldn't blab about it in public. i'm sure there's ways to bring their concern to jagex personally. if i don't like something at work i don't jump up on the desk and yell out to the customers. i go into my supervisors office and tell them. anyone who doesn't understand this has an iq of a stick.

Please refrain from personally attacking people who may disagree with your position. The question in debate is whether JaGex ought to exercise censorship against moderators who do not share the same vision as JaGex - those whom may disagree. It is not the same as 'jumping on a desk and yelling at customers' at all - the analogy is very weak because there's very few similarities between the two.

My view on the matter would be that it should be most appropriate if the views of disgruntled moderators were to be listened to, should it be presented in a way that is constructive and civil. I do not shun controversy, nor criticism - it operates in their interests to be self-correcting.

It is a shame that sometimes JaGex does not fully justify their actions - thus it can only be assumed that they have ulterior motives. Hmmm..

Jagex, a multi-million pound company should justify (Or walkthrough - as they are already justified) why they've done something, to its customers? No, not at all. What they've done is justified, those demodded know exactly why they were demodded. I've already supplied a rather large quote by Mod Mat K in a previous page of this thread. These moderators weren't censored, they're free to post their opinions. They are guided to post them in a feedback forum for Moderators (As stated in previous quote) as their opinions in public can be seen as the opinion of all Moderators (They have green backgrounds/Silver crowns). If every other Moderator can express their opinions in a certain forum - so can those that were demodded. It's attention seeking when they go out of their way to make it seem like they're the only ones with an opinion.

And I believe his analogy does apply. If all of the other staff in that place can express their opinions to the management privately and respectfully, then so should they. Should they choose to jump up on that table and scream and shout, they shouldn't be surprised as to why their were dismissed. To then go outside of that place of work and preach that they were fired for disagreeing with the ownership...They're not being entirely honest.

  14.

Okay, I'll accept that for Ken, but not for Jibby. Never. Jibby criticized them on a site that has no officiall affiliation with Jagex. That right there was some straight up bullshit. What if they criticized them on Tip? Maybe it a Times article? Would you have an issue for what they say on here?

That's why I no longer have my real RSN name on here. I'm not gonna catch any backlash over there for what I say here.

When growing up in school, there was one specific talk we were all given.

If you want to drink, or smoke -- or even fight; fine. You're going to do it, you're human. But out of respect for those who you represent, and your peers, don't do it while you are representing the school (We wore uniform).

If you're wearing the crown and bad mouthing them, no matter where, you deserve to be stopped. You're risking the image of every other Moderator. Resign your voluntary position if you no longer want to represent them - or choose to speak badly about them. No-one forces people to remain as a Moderator.

I don't want to quote anything, so I'll just blurt it out here.

@Carl, I've taken what Mod Mat K said and truth be told, he's right - Moderators of any sort shouldn't be going around and making Jagex look bad on Jagex's own forums. However, retaliation against those that "speak their mind" in that position implies two things:

    - You're not permitted to have a public opinion outside of the company line, and

    - The community automatically assumes that all Moderators are on Jagex's side, at all times.

Well, if you want to shout out your negative opinion, resign your position before you do so. Don't ruin the image of many because you don't want to provide feedback the same way as they do. That's selfish and simply attention-seeking.

I'm not opposed to having Moderators only air their grievances out in a private manner, but when that fails, just keeping your mouth shut is the worst thing that could be done. Jagex's public behavior (not their private, since I haven't seen that side of the fence in six months) has led me to believe that they'd rather you keep your mouth shut.

A lot has changed in 6 months. I'd love to discuss every point in full, but that's not an option.

[EDIT] Talking on a site not related to RuneScape shouldn't incur any penalties, either. I'm not shy about my opinion of Jagex, either positive or negative, and I'll be damned if they want to take action on me in a domain they can't control.

I've already commented on that above.

Omali: I understand what you're saying, but in RuneScape each player has their own set of tools. You have a Report Abuse button and an ignore list. It's not like Pmods are the only method of reporting people.

  15.

I'd definitely say that would be the polite thing to do, but if they chose to take it out in the open they shouldn't be punished for it. Also, on Tip you can't actually get a hold of someone in a timely manner and get an honest response. At Jagex... well I don't think it works the same way. :x

... :wall: You just don't get it.

Anyway, to quote something (not just directed at the above post)

All moderators can have their own opinions and we are more than happy for them to express them. In fact, we have given the moderators their own feedback forum so they have somewhere do this. Let me post what the advice we give moderators about posting their opinions, it may help you to understand where we are coming from.

There has been a lot of talk recently about what moderators can and can't say publicly and I hope that this thread and the subsequent dialogue will help make it clear in your minds what we are trying to achieve and why.

Our ultimate aim is to create a game which people enjoy playing. Part of that enjoyment comes from the community they play with everyday and both you and us can impact on that environment every day.

Whether we intended it or not, it is a fact that you can influence the community more than most regular players, whether on the forums or in game.

Ideally, we'd love every single one of you to spend all of your time being really nice to everyone you meet and doing whatever they want... within reason of course. But, we are realistic, we know that you are players and want to play the game or just chill with your friends which is why we have never asked, or ever will ask, you to do that.

However, it is true to say that you have the ability to negatively impact the community as well as positively impact it. The problem with negatively impacting the community is that not only does the community go to a worse place, but the pressure put upon the other moderators is higher. If one mod is saying that "Jagex are thieves" anyone seeing them is going to be less inclined to listen to another mod trying to explain the situation to them or stop them from doing something dangerous.

Disagreeing with us is absolutely fine, but you should think about how the community will feel reading what you have typed in. In most cases if we see something that we think will be damaging to the community we can have a chat with you and show you what we mean in more detail. However, there is a big difference between disagreeing with us and either publicly ranting against Jagex as a moderator or inciting the community to raise arms against us.

A great example that you may have seen used is that if someone who volunteers to help out in a charity shop starts telling people who come in not to buy things because the charity behind it all just wastes their money anyway, the charity would pretty soon ask that person to no longer volunteer to help out in their shop as their actions are causing damage to the overall aims of the charity. However, the individual would be free to stand outside the shop and air their views to anyone in the street who may choose to listen

    Mat.
