Some things to think about: FACTS 1. Jagex receives tons of reports under Rule 1. Some unknown (to us) percentage of them are for words that the chat filter has already converted to stars, and, as such, are not reportable and a waste of their time. 2. Human resources are allocated to process the report queues. How much automation is involved is unknown to us. 3. Runescape is an international game and now has at least 3 language versions. We do not know if the same filtering algorithm and word-list is used by all servers. It is likely that the same filter processes English in the UK, US, and AUS, where different words have different amounts of "evil" associated with them. In addition, there is no *requirement* that players who, for example, speak French only use French-language servers. 4. Many RS players have complained about the filter in the past. CONJECTURE 1. Jagex trusts their player mods a good deal. 2. Player mods have less to do since the RWT updates over a year ago. 3. Jagex wants to treat its player base as a "little older" and not perceived as a game for 10 y.o. kids. 4. MechScape uses the same system and is aimed towards older players (thanks to someone up there for this). 5. Jagex wants to get rid of immature ppl who'd abuse the new privilege. POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS 1. Pmods and other will report players who blatantly use rude/curse language and some will be banned permanently. Jagex will be able to devote less manpower to processing report queues for rule 1 after a couple of months. 2. Players who speak other languages will be able to communicate more freely. Is it possible to speak French without "assez" and variants? 3. Players who formerly complained about the chat filter will be appeased, and Jagex loves to give us the warm fuzzies. 4. A percentage of players (or the parents) in various localities will be offended by various words. After an initial uproar, some will leave the game or forbid their children to play. Others will deal with it and move on. 5. Jagex will continue to tweak the filter list. I won't say it's a "win win" for Jagex, but it doesn't look too awful from their POV IMHO.
