It's just what I was taught in English class. I'm not real sure on the legitimacy of the information. But it kind of makes sense, if you think about it.

The Vikings called Iceland "Iceland" because it was habitable, but they wanted it for themselves. So they named the not so habitable Greenland "Greenland" because they thought settlers would go there and perish, leaving Iceland all to the Vikings.
