  1. Runescape is a Role-Playing Game.

If somebody decides to take on the role of a scammer, lurer, or botter, then so much the worse for Jagex. <sarcasm> That's emergent gameplay for you </sarcasm>.

While I won't bot, I wouldn't condemn those that do as morally bankrupt.

Think of 'honor' in the wilderness. They're a set of arbitrary rules set to make PvP more fun. Jagex rules are set to make Runescape more fun (debatable, I know lol).

Why do you consider Jagex rules a standard of absolute morality that can be extrapolated to the real world? Do you also consider honor to be like that?

What is the moral difference between these sets of rules? Are Jagex rules more important simply because the legislating body has the banhammer?

Finally, do you not realize that psych arguments without citations will fall flat every time? Have you put thought into this or did you just write what you thought 'must' be right? I'm guessing the latter. Authoritarian morality has a tendency to assume other people should and do think exactly the way they do.

  2. I think the only solution is to make Runescape more dangerous.

There aren't any Nex bots, staking bots or PKing bots despite the high profit potential of these activities. Why? Because their profit comes with one hell of a risk. While bots can be programmed to do almost anything, they are inherently dumb (as of yet...). Few people would trust a bot to keep their items safe if the players themselves had trouble keeping their items safe.

Having said this, I have no idea how this could be implemented without bringing back PvP everywhere like in RSC...

To the OP: You want far too much. You want a procedure to catch bots which couldn't be circumvented even if the scripters knew everything about the procedure? AND no false positives? In short, you want a task that a Turing machine cannot complete while humans can. You're only going to get that kind of thing if the human brain turns out to be a hypercomputer. I don't see Jagex (or any company for that matter) implementing supertasks into their game.

  3. My account was also hijacked via account recovery and while I had only a fraction of the wealth of this player I was never entitled to any of it back. It would be unfair to have one rule for one and one rule for someone else.

But the reasoning there is that Jagex does not have the resources to track the wealth of every single hijacked account. They have no obligation to invest their resources in that.

In this case, Jagex has already tracked the perpetrators down.

The police have no obligation to fish out the diamond that someone dropped into a septic tank. But if they've already fished it out, they'd better return it (Although a small fee seems reasonable).

  4. To all the girls playing this site, did it ever happen that you were asked if you were "really a girl" or accused of pretending to be one to get attention? I'm 100% female in real life and my character on Runescape wears a skirt and has long hair, which means I get a lot of those questions or accusations, so much so that I just ignore it now and continue on with whatever it is I'm doing at the moment. Either that, or I'm asked out... creepy much? Anyway, I'm probably being over-dramatic, but it's still an interesting conversation topic, right? So, what's with the stereotype that girls can't play Runescape and what are some of your experiences in the game? Whether your a girl or not, go ahead and share!

You'll get this kind of thing on many online games.

The loudest people are 12 year olds that can't grasp the fact that their view of the world is a sorely limited one. (Apologies to all intelligent 12-year-olds, I know you exist.)

  5. i dont get why everyone assumes the people who bet are dumb. ive had some really smart betters tonight, one guy came out 20m up. another 15m up and another 1m up from being 6m, down. its all about doing it at the right time for an increased chance.

No matter what your strategy, you will always lose on average.

People who think like you are what makes this game work.

  6. What if someone keeps on doubling their bet until they win?

It doesn't matter if you play the game once or 1000 times, the winning ratio is always going to be (4/10). You might get a luck streak and make some money, but the longer you play, the closer your going to get to that 40% win average. Aside from a lucky roll, there is no way to win money playing the game for a long period of time.

if you lost 999 games in a row, doubling your bet each time, but won the 1000th game, you would be ahead

You would. But since both you and the host has a finite amount of money, you will lose money in the long run.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_(betting_system)

Wikipedia has an okay article on it.

  7. Meh, everyone should know the scams/lures.

A guy offered me 200k to appear on a 'video' of his. I took half the money up front. He does the whole D baxe drop thing, I laugh and tell him I'm not interested in items with a high alch value and thank you for the 100k.

It's hilarious when they fail so bad. The populations will educate itself through trial-and-error, the stupid will learn or die out, and scamming won't be that large of an issue. Give it a few weeks.

  8.

Serious question: is it possible for you guys to disagree with what he says but not attack him personally? I thought the OP brought up a good point about how they're quite a few more high levels than in previous months/years. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the OP. But quite frankly I've also seen (negative) changes on these forums, to the point where it's quite difficult to find players maturely discussing something.

I see no problem with personal attacks unless there's enough of it to stop the content getting across. I agree that the OP's point might be valid, but he is unwilling to provide evidence when asked. When someone insists that they're right without providing evidence, the only replies available are the ignore and the point-and-laugh.

OK. I'd like to rephrase the OP's post a little. Instead of asking, "Is RuneScape Dying?" how about asking "Is RuneScape sustainable?".

I'll admit that RS has gotten really popular in the past few days, but that doesn't mean that RuneScape (by it's very design) isn't on the path to eventual death.

    - When you start out as a new player there is a huge mountain of skills/tasks/quests that you must attempt to climb, and with every update that mountain gets higher. Is there a point at which a new player will simply get too discouraged at what is in front of him and simply decide not to try?

I don't really think that the mountain's height is a problem. When I started playing Runescape, I had no thoughts of maxing. Also, I have doubts on whether the mountain has gotten higher time-wise. Unlocking all available content is much easier now than it was in 2005.

    - Moneymaking at high levels has gotten quite easy lately, but still remains pretty difficult for newer players. Will competition with level 130s who have 500M+ in the bank be enough to make the game unplayable for for them?

New players don't compete with level 130's. They compete with people their level that utilize similar training methods. The only place where you have to put in more work because you started late is the rares market.

    - Is the entirety of RuneScape just getting too complex? Training methods are constantly revised. The map is constantly being expanded. When will there just be to much information to process and create a barrier to entry for a new player?

No reason you can't use the old and simple training methods. New methods shouldn't devalue old methods. You're still doing the same thing chopping yews for xp, if anything it's less crowded because your competition is chopping ivy.

Here is a little example from real life. I am a horrible ice skater. My attempts at skating usually involve me stumbling slowly around the rim of the rink holding on to the wall, attempting not to fall down. Meanwhile, all around me there are people racing, spinning, and jumping backwards. Most of them learned when they were little kids and have a huge advantage over me. At my point in life, learning to skate has just become prohibitively inconvenient and there is no way for me to "compete" with those around me.

In a similar way, everyone who is a high level today became so when RuneScape was (figuratively) a child. But RuneScape is growing older, and people starting today are at a huge disadvantage. I guess that the real question is whether that disadvantage will ever become so big that nobody will want to even start playing anymore.

The problem with your analogy is that you're focusing too much on competition. Unless you're learning skating solely to compete, it shouldn't matter how good other people are. You're doing the same thing.

    My thoughts in bold.

  9. This should make f2pers filthy rich, seeing as most of the 90+ ones kill greaters for xp...

We don't have any confirmation about the ashed being any good yet, let alone if they are worth much. In all likelihood, as they might/should not be alterable, they'll be slow prayer xp(ecto is still atleast twice as slow as altar, around 4 times slower if the ashes don't stack), as the lowest monster droping the highest level ashes is extremely easy and fast to kill(nechryael, easier to kill than any dragons), they'll likely award similar/lower standard xp than dragon bones, which would put their price at around 2-2.5k each, not enough to make most players care much about them. Greater/lesser demon bones should be comparable to baby dragon ones, which wouldn't make anyone anywhere close to rich. Sorry for being a buzzkill, but i don't see this update having the whole scale impact everyone else sees.

2-2.5k per greater demon will be revolutionary in f2p. Expect god armour to rise if this happens.

  10. most rare is blue.

    most common is purple.

    /thread.

You really shouldn't end the thread prematurely.

Phat prices aren't solely dictated by supply you know...

I'm pretty sure purple is the most common because of the dupe. Not sure about the rest, if someone has/can get data on relative phat abundance this topic might be worthy of General Discussion. I think I saw an RSOF thread on this topic some time ago but I have no idea how that went.

  11. Okay so hold up wait a min.

With all these new wildy and blah blah stuff going on i think some of us overlooked something.

So Today is Feb 1st the day wildy came back.

Theres something ironic about this what u ask

i like many people are gonna purchase members today.

KINGMICKEZ25 U NOOB GET TO THE POINT

I bought members and got 28 a days of members = a months subscription

most months have 30 or 31 days so i feel robbed of two days membership.

Kingmickez25 why are u [bleep]ing about two days membership seeing as what today is alot of people are gonna do what i just did

PROFIT WELL PLAYED JAGEX. U MONEY MAKERS

Great post. I especially liked the part where you added in comma's and periods!

    Yes, I like commas too.

  12. Pre-GE, items didn't fluctuate in price very much because there was no way for people to track the fluctuations. So, if coal stabilized at say 200gp, soon coal=200gp would be fixed in most people's minds. Sellers wouldn't accept less and buyers wouldn't accept more. Therefore prices were resistant to change. The Grand Exchange provided a reliable way to track those tiny fluctuations. People could be certain how much an item was worth and trade at that price. So prices became much more flexible, responding to smaller variations in supply and demand.

tl;dr It's just a natural consequence of having a reliable trader barter for everyone. Everyone can be sure they got the best deal possible at that time, so they didn't have to rely on rules of thumb.

    Runescape isn't dying

  13. Isn't cave crawlers like 5500-6000 cballs used per hour for 1 effigy per hour roughly? Thats like 2m+ p/hr spent not even including repairs for rapier and such. I would think only the very rich could sustain this for a long length of time. Very rich as in billions of gp to blow and nothing else to spend it on. 5m rc xp would be roughly 200m if i'm calculating this right. Someone feel free to do the real math i was just brainstorming if this would be a viable method for a top rank player.

    So, probably no.

    Fair enough

  14. Green, my question was is it worth the trouble doing something I didn't enjoy doing for the boost. Yes, I know Chaotics are better than a whip. No I don't know if it is worth the trouble of soloing DG for it. I won't group up, because people like you don't have any patience for someone who hasn't been around in the past 3 years. (Yes I've logged on occasionally to check things out, such as DG, and found I wasn't all that into it)

Before you call me stupid, read ALL of my posts please.

    This

  15. I'm just curious about one thing. Say, for someone who doesn't really like to DG (such as myself, mainly because I haven't bothered learning strategies), would it be a mistake to stick with the whip, and NOT obtain a CLS?

I'm just curious, because I'd much prefer to stick to a whip if Chaotics aren't all that much better.

Your question needs to be a bit more precise. If you care about gp/hr, it will be a mistake. If you don't really care about killing efficiency and enjoy killing slowly with a whip, feel free to do so.

Sorry, I'll be more precise. Once I get back into Runescape, I pretty much only plan on doing slayer...so, is it worth it to spend god knows how many hours soloing DG to get a CLS?

    I don't group up because:

1.) I haven't learned the tricks of the trade

2.) I don't feel like being harassed for not doing things right by randoms(No patience for a newb)

Well... If you're going to spend a lot of time slaying, a chaotic will save you a LOT of time. I recommend you get it even if you have to solo DG your way to it.

And as an added tip, a rapier would be better than a CLS. There was a massive thread on this a few pages back.

  16. Thanks for the replies guys. I couldn't care less what you think, thought you'd like to know so I posted. My bad. Try going in Mod MMG or Mod Mark's clan chat for a while a long time.

Dude, this is a forum. You know, a place where people exchange ideas? If you say something that makes a dozen people think "rubbish!", they're going to express it. Anyway, most people are just politely asking for confirmation from a reliable source. No need to go all "I couldn't care less what you think" when it's plain that you do.

You guys are being nasty to me so Imma be nasty back.

We're not trying to be nasty to you. We're trying to check if you're giving us accurate information. I'm sorry about suspecting your information but false/exaggerated news has been on these forums multiple times.

  17. I like how that jagex mod didn't even answer the question.

If they didn't make it 1.5% outside the wild theif+prayer would be worthless.

Personally, I'm betting they'll add training spots for the useless brawlers to the wild. They've been hinting at adding improved resources to the wilderness to encourage skillers to go out there. Maybe some blackjackable NPCs in the rogue castle and boosting the prayer brawler bonus to 500% for bones buried in the wilderness.

IF the problem crossed their mind.

  18. Thanks for the replies guys. I couldn't care less what you think, thought you'd like to know so I posted. My bad. Try going in Mod MMG or Mod Mark's clan chat for a while a long time.
