Currently looking at Smithing as my first 99 as it's rare for an f2p. It's taken me a while an I've worked out a method to do it with as little loss of GP as possible. Currently at 96 & about 3m more XP to go. Have 6m GP so technically I've go the money for it but it's still taking a while with GE trade limits. .

Not afraid of dying but annoyed when it happens unfairly. Was Rune Mining in Wildy and got attacked by a Rev. Not normally a problem but this time something starts lagging me out. By the time the lag clears I'm standing in Lummy. . . . TBH I think it was the adverts. I noticed a each time a particular bit of animation from an O2 ad that slowed my PC down to a crawl.

for F2P, Rune berserker is still worth getting, just don't charge it. Ordinary shields don't give a Strength bonus. [bleep]ed & Berserkers do. A Rune Berserker(0) gives +2 which increases your max hits. Speeds up combat training. You lose def bonus compared to a Rune Kite but if your def is high enough it doesn't make much dif & you can always use better food if needed.
