I can't remember how it was back then, but that doesn't mean I didn't play. I was like 12 years old and I had better things on my mind (girls). Anyway, I remember when lumbridge was a safe spot, varrock was sort of because of the guards that would attack anyone that attacked another player. Also! The option to switch from Non-pk to pk, was awesome! At one point people started making lower level pkers that were pure, and pking around lumbridge off of the cabbage there. I do remember when gems first came out although I can't remember exactly how the system went. I think there were gem rocks at first? The banks. That was crazy, you could only store gp in there. Also -> Karamja was a major fun spot to be. Fishing and pking, on the old dock. The other main pk spot that I can remember was "Cooks". If I recall right the Varrock teleport brought you right out in front of the cooks guild. People would go there and run into the cooks, going out the backdoor to get away from people. For some reason I remember rapidly clicking on the rocks. Mining and fishing was not automated, you had to manually keep clicking. Right? At first (where the term pile-jumper really came from): Someone would get a kill in varrock. Everyone would pile up on top of the person so that he could not grab the items. See, this was before they implemented the system they have nowadays that makes it so only you can see your loot for a certain allotted time. Everyone was free to grab anything as soon as you got the kill. Oh, how I loathe getting older...:( Edit: And the favorite training spot of old greats such as Alchemon, Trixstar(I think), Moon...mage? was..Ice Giants/Warriors in the dungeon where you get Blurite. Can't remember the name. What was that one spell that we use to have..you could use it on a monster and it would switch attack to you? Either that or run away, I can't remember exactly.
