I start with a sketch, re-do it with a 1 pixel brush and try my best to keep the lines at 1 pixel wide. If its wider, it will throw off the look of your sig.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And I use Photoshop, mainly so I can use the layer and history pallets to my advantage.

paint is good to start in but to draw something that looks good go into graphics gale draw a picture with the pencil and colour it in with pencil and paint bucket to give shading like this
