Mayhem - Ordo Ab Chao

So, the godfathers of Black metal are going to release a new studio album in few weeks. Since one of the greatest albums (not just black metal or even metal) ever, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, they've more or less failed on last 2 studio albums. Now they got Attila back and at least on the released song "Anti" he sounds pretty lunatic, in the good meaning of the word.

So what's your thoughs on this album? Will it bring them back to their roots, be another failure or what? I was thinking to preorder it, but dunno seriously. The sounds on "Anti" are horrible and according to Hellhammer, it's a final version. Attila sounds great like I already mentioned, but drums for example are as horrible as they could be on a demo recorded in early 90s. This song sounds ok, but that's it. It's nothing unforgetable like pretty much all songs on DMDS, it's not bad, but still. Personally it just brings some demo band to my mind, not one of the legendariest bands ever.

Playlist:

1. A Wise Birthgiver - 3:30

2. Wall of Water - 4:40

3. Great Work of Ages - 3:52

4. Deconsecrate - 4:07

5. Illuminate Eliminate - 9:40

6. Psychic Horns - 6:32

7. Key to the Storms - 3:52

8. Anti - 4:33

edit: The song "Anti" can be legally downloaded from their official site http://www.moonfrost.net/mayhem/ Just click enter the site, chose downloads and then audio.

Let's see... Chimera... Grand Declaration of War... No wonder it's rated to be one of their best albums :P Anyways I hope it's worth those words, Mayhem's one band which I'd hope to see releasing some good stuff once again.

Disappointed me. The sounds remind me of some demo tape from the early 90s. If a band like Mayhem release an album with this kind sounds, it can't be a mistake. They got the cash and good company behind them, so it can't be because of budget. Like this it doesn't sound grim, brutal, raw or even good.

If you ask me, this doesn't get even close to DMDS. It doesn't have the same cruel atmosphere, it doesn't kick to the nuts like a wounded moose and it most likely won't become THE black metal album.

However this album isn't bad. With good sounds the drums would be great and would give the earnt credits to Hellhammer. Attila sounds as mentally sick as always which is a good part here, shame the singing isn't mixed as well as on DMDS and now they are a bit too lame.

If this album was a demo, I'd probably pee honey and pay whatever they asked for the real release. But as it isn't a demo, I gotta give it a 7 on scale 4-10. It's not bad, it's not great and it's not unforgetable.
