I have 6 oak planks but the boatman doesn't seem to accept them? Why not?

Maybe it's like with the other quests, that you need bare Planks made from normal wood.

where is an easy place to get planks, this quest has taken far too long to complete

In case of quests where guides says "planks", they specifically meant only normal planks works. You can get planks from barbarian outpost easily

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.
