Communicating and making friends

I just thought I'd put this out there to see what others thought on the matter. I personally have played Runescape on and off since the end of 2001 and never used to find it hard to make friends in game and play. More recently I've been finding it harder and harder to actually make friends in game! I find myself playing on my own a lot of the time with the only conversations I have with the few people I have on my friends list. Runescape just keeps getting bigger and bigger, with more and more things that you can do and need to do. I just don't think people even have time to have a conversation with you let alone make friends.

Whenever I am training my skills I will try to spark up a conversation with people near me, of late this hasn't been that effective. It just seems to me that people don't have the time to participate in a conversation. Every now and then I will find someone to chat with while I'm training my combat skills or woodcutting. But for the majority of the time it's either just small chit-chat or nothing at all.

I guess my questions to everyone is a couple of things. Do you also find it hard to make friends in game now? Does no one have the time to talk anymore? Please discuss!

I don't find it hard to make new friends in game now than before. I actually think it's much easier, because now I have Tip.It. I have got alot of friends thanks to these forums.

To make friends just thorugh the game could be a little harder though. As you said, there's much more things you could do in RS, and that's one of the main reasons I think.

I have myself tried to chat with people when skilling, and I have actually made quite a few friends from that...About 10 or more. I think it's a great time to chat when you're for example trains fishing or woodcutting, where you don't need to concentrate so much on what you're doing. Many times when I have trained skills like fishing, which doesn't need like 100% of your brain capacity, I have made new friends.

If I should summarize all this, I must say I don't think it's harder to make new friends now than before.

Myself I have also got alo of friends on my friends list who I use to chat to every so often , not only when I'm skilling. And 99% of the time I have a really nice chat with whoever of my friends I'm talking to.

Maybe this could be explained with some of them never skills, and just pick cabbages (Yes, I got some OoC:ers on my friends list), but I still think that you're able to chat at the same time as you fish, cut down trees, merchants, smiths, crafts, mines or whatever you do.

I have one decent friend on Runecape but she is rarely on so, i play without talking to anyone.

Tragic.

I have made a few friends before but they always turn out to be immature scammers who ask to 'borrow' 100k. etc.

P2P offers more and better ways of making money than f2p. That's one of the cons you just have to play with if you don't feel like having 1 bigmac meal less per month.

'back in the day' when the runescape community was smaller, people did seem to get on better because there were less opportunities to as it were connect with other players and so maybe more people took an effort, but I think what your describing is the general sense of anomie (normlessness) thats happening a lot in postmodernistic western society.
