August 14, 200718 yr Hello, I recently ran into a little problem after buying a laptop that came with Vista. I used Partition Magic to partition my HD fine with XP but with Vista, the program isn't compatible. How can I partition my HD? Any other recommendations/programs to use?
August 14, 200718 yr Vista has a good built in partitioner. Right click on my computer icon > click manage > then on the left hand side click "disk management"
August 14, 200718 yr Author when you shrink the partition does vista automatically make a new partition in its place? If not how do i do that.. I remember messing with the partition on a XP and it totally screwed up my comp..but Partition Magic saved me..dont know how I'll be saved if it screws up on Vista.
August 14, 200718 yr Shrinking a partition does exactly that, it makes it smaller. You are then left with free space on the drive that you can create another partition. I used to use Partition magic too, but with Vista it's kind of redundant. The same company that make Partition magic also makes PQ-Deploy, which was brilliant for imaging and copying drives, but unfortunately that doesn't work with Vista either :( . But yet again Vista comes to the rescue with its own tools for imaging, based on ghost so I am led to believe :). [Assist-X]

When you shrink the partition, you will see a block of gray space at the front or back of the full drive block. The gray space is unpartitioned space, click on that space, select how much you want to use of it, then just following the rest of the steps to get another partition. It's very easy, I have used it many times on Vista, nothing bad has happened.
August 15, 200718 yr If you have ultimate or business, you could use windows virtual pc. Eh, what for? Using virtual PC will not allow him to use PQ-Magic again. As far as I know, Virtual PC 2007 will run on any version of Vista, and run very well especially if your hardware supports virtualization :) [Assist-X]
