August 27, 200718 yr I'm applying to be a Tip.It moderator ( ) and one of the questions they ask is "Do you have a firewall, and what kind?". I know I have a firewall, but I don't know how to find out what kind it is, don't bash me for not knowing please :
August 27, 200718 yr is it a hardware firewall through router or something? or software? im guessing if you have XP or anything past that, you have windows firewall for sure.
August 27, 200718 yr Author is it a hardware firewall through router or something? or software? im guessing if you have XP or anything past that, you have windows firewall for sure. Sweet thanks for the help, I forgot to mention I had an XP. I know nothing about Firewalls, so if you hadn't mentioned Windows Firewall, I wouldn't have gotten any further. I did a system search for Windows Firewall and you were right \ Thanks again!
August 27, 200718 yr if you want more security use this http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/home.jsp though, at times i think it can be quite restricting blocking alot of ports for programs. But im sure if you know what your doing with it you can manually unblock any ports that you need being blocked.
August 31, 200718 yr I agree with LP. Get zone alarm as xp's built-in firewall only blocks incoming threats. It will only bother you for a while with pop-ups, you get an option to remember the settings as to which programs are allowed access to the internet or trusted zone. oober
August 31, 200718 yr I agree with LP. Get zone alarm as xp's built-in firewall only blocks incoming threats. No it doesn't, it blocks outgoing too. Some programs are automatically detected and Windows automatically gives the program internet access. Some you will have to allow. Although that does not make the Windows firewall good. It is very easy for programs to fool it and it does not pass most leak tests. It's still better than nothing.

Some programs are automatically detected and Windows automatically gives the program internet access. Some you will have to allow. It only asks for programs that try to listen for incoming connections, not ones that attempt to make outgoing connections. Even if you click "Keep blocking" when it asks it will still allow outgoing data from the same program.
August 31, 200718 yr Sorry, I was under the impression it only did half the job, sorry if I made things more confusing runscapeloser22. I would still go for the zone alarm firewall though, it is better than the windows firewall. But it is better than no protection at all. oober
September 1, 200718 yr zonealarm is extremely good programme.. though when I got it it blocked the whole internet. haha yes it's that good As said you've probably got a windows firewall. Good luck on trying to be a mod!!!
