Magic exp is earned as BaseExp + HitDone*2

 

and

 

Hit point exp is earned as HitDone*4/3

 

 

 

IIRC, If you cast a damaging spell with a staff set on Def style

 

then you magic exp is split equally between Magic and Defense.
