xXru1n3dXx
Try closing down programs that run in the background. One might be periodically connecting to some server. Most programs that are running in the background don't use the net, and I know which ones are. When I get the random ping rise I check to see what processes that are running which shouldn't be, and they are the same as they would be when I have a normal ping. Also, the ping issue isn't just on my computer, it's on my dads aswell and I would assume my sisters (haven't checked) so I doubt it's software I have installed that is causing the problem. If a program on one computer starts downloading from the net it will affect pings from the other computers, since you're sharing a single internet connection between all 3 PCs. The next time it happens you can use the "tracert" (traceroute) command to see at which point the lag is introduced.

I know that, the point I am making though is it can happen when only one computer is on. Say i'm just using my dad's computer, the ping attacks would still happen just with this on, and my dad only just recently reformatted so I am pretty damn sure it isn't software based. Sorry for not being clear. The next time it happens you can use the "tracert" (traceroute) command to see at which point the lag is introduced. Yeah I have actually, forgot to post them here however. I'll post fresh ones later when I have another attack. Trace complete. [/hide] The last one is basically when the ping attack died (back to low ping). The first tracert shown was done around 7 minutes before the others as I had around 2 attacks. Basically the ping attacks start straight from my ISP, but i'm unsure if they are the reason I am having these attacks though (as it happened to me with my previous ISP). Also about the " Destination protocol unreachable." in the tracerts was to do with my router. Fixed it (after all the tracerts) by disabling SYN Flooding checking & ICMP Redirection checking. If you need fresh tracerts without this little error just ask. I may try our older modem/router (which I don't remember having any problems with) sometime this week. Just got to set up the ISP settings and hook it up in my room, so yeah i'll do it in the next few days. No idea if it is the reason why this is happening, but trial and error can't hurt. xXru1n3dXx
Pushed all the way to page 2 eh? Sigh. Does anyone know a decent tech forum that might know an answer to this? RS Stats | BF2 Stats | ARSCV | LastFM
xXru1n3dXx
School certificate is over, so I have time for games again. Looks like I still suffer from this BS. Anyone got any ideas? RS Stats | BF2 Stats | ARSCV | LastFM
Chris
I don't think this'll be of much help, but I'll give it a go anyway. As you know by what seems like a good bit of knowledge of pinging and tracing websites. The way to sort this out is trial and error. Try the following. 1) Phone your telephone company and get them to test the line (Assuming you're using ADSL). 2) Remove all computers from the router apart from yours, test accordingly. If it happens again, you have at least removed your dad and sisters machines from the equation. 3) Borrow someone elses ADSL router or buy a cheap one. Test it again with only your computer connected. If it lags you know it's not your router. 4) Replace the CAT5, should be cheap to do. Unplug all computers from the router apart from your PC. If it lags again you know it's not the cable. :P I suppose you're getting it. These problems are rarely anything you can deal with personally. I've been experiencing slowdown and lag [bleep]es like these for a few months myself. In my case it's the cable company. Recently it's picked up again and I'm getting full speed all the time. You might want to change ISP's too? Like I said, I don't think this'll be much help. But do your best to narrow it down, that way when you do figure out what the problem is you know what you're talking about. :D Notoriously Trollish. xXru1n3dXx
Thanks a lot Chris, will try some of those out. I've got a spare modem/router, which I will try out tomorrow. Also after a few other things I will call up my ISP or get the line tested. Churning to a new ISP is kind of out of the question though, seeing as we just only changed to this current one this year. And yeah, getting a new CAT5 cable shouldn't be too hard seeing as they are pretty cheap. Will post results, thanks.
