You can also use the sound, if you hear a sound the moment he attacks it's range attack, otherwise it's mage. And I actually found it easier to stand near him (not in melee range though), so I could see it better. And for the inv, try to save at least 2 doses of range pot for beating Jad, it'll make a big deal easier. Getting 60 prayer is also suggested, you'll be a bit more safe on the pot side (you could take one sup restore less and switch if for a brew or range pot). Personally, I also suggest a d square, DFS (best if you have the money), or a granite shield. A granite shield has amazing range defence, which is the most important defence. Don't be too upset and just try again, it took me six tries too, but it's worth it.
