my desktop keeps overheating, it is about three years old this coming December. i have expelled all dust out of the case, that helped for like .5 degrees F ... anyway Ive installed speed fan, it says my fan is at 4588 RPMs is that good? any help would be great. also this thing is custom built from a local computer store so its no brand name PC, and that's probably not the problem because its always been below like 80 degrees F for the past years any help?

 

 

 

 

 

EDIT: just some more info, so i can maybey narrow down alot of things that could be wrong.

all of these listed have a picture of a flame next to them, im guessing that thats way too hot in that area.

The fan speed seems a little high but it may be normal for your computer. The fan speeds depends on (obviously) how fast it spins and how big the fan is. Bigger fans spin slower and smaller fans spin faster.

well the comp has shut down multiple times and went to a screen explaining it was caused by thermal overheating, im thinking of getting another fan installed, and a new graphics card, water cooled perhaps? if its any beter as a coolant. would that be smart?

Well I would say water cooling is extreme.

 

 

 

You maybe need to re-apply thermal paste to the cpu. A tube costs around $5. Try that first, if that doesn't work, then look into another case fan.

Since it is custom built, it is probably overclocked to some insane speeds, all you have to do is go into bios and set it back to normal.

Well the symbols next to the temps mean nothing in speedfan ebcause they don't adjust to different models.

 

 

 

If your cpu was really 105c it would not even be running. I don't think it's correct. The core sensor of the chip is usually 10c hotter than the surface cpu sensor, which would make it about 50c.

 

 

 

Tell us what processor you have and what speed it's running at.

 

 

 

Denismage just because it's a custom built doesn't mean it's overclocked. Especially if he didn't build it. Why would a company do this and risk the life of the components they put in? (don't say anything more, I know extreme system from alienware and stuff come pre-overclocked)

i got an intel pentium 4 running at 3346.9 mhz i think... if this is obviously wrong, or you may be skeptical about it i would appreciate a way to find out a more accurate answer.

well today in the afternoon I'm going to take this thing to the supplier and see what they say.

If your CPU was at 105C, your computer would burst into flames. My computer is at 2170RPM and an average CPU temperature of 25C - And I've overclocked it from 2GHz to 2.55GHz.

 

 

 

Make sure you're reading the right values. ^^ Better yet, take a picture of the temperature list. Also, if you know the type of fan and heatsink you have (or even better, can get a picture), that'd be helpful.
