Router Constantly Decreasing Speed...

My internet was a fair bit laggy today, so, my automatic action was to reset the wireless router. It was at 1 mbps and when I reset it, my connection started again at 54 mbps, and within ten minutes, it steadily decreased back down to 1 mbps, and now my connection is unbearably slow.

 

 

 

Could there be some sort of interference (not sure how that would work, but)?

 

I think the problem is on my laptop, because another computer connected wirelessly works fine?

 

 

 

EDIT: Now it's back to 48, weird...

I had a similar problem with my BT Homehub, the problem turned out to be a dodgy ADSL filter (the box between the phone socket and the wireless router) i just switched it over with the spare in the box and it worked fine.

That shouldn't make any difference, he's having trouble with the wireless connection between his router and his laptop, not between his router and the net.

The wireless connection speed is affected by signal strength and interference. You could try switching wireless channels (1, 6 and 11 are the usual choices, and 11 is often congested). Good positioning of the router and wireless card/dongle is also important.

Once again, as collective said, that has nothing to do with the problem. RAM has nothing to do with his wireless connection. The number of people in the area coming online also doesn't have anything to do with it as any other wireless signals from neighbors will be limited in strength.

 

 

 

I'd be shooting for either bad hardware or some kind of local interference (cordless phone, microwave, ect) and positioning problem like Collective was going for.

From my basic knowledge of wireless, this is the best answer I can give you.

 

 

 

When your wireless decreases speed it extends it's range, hence having 24mbs you can get a steadier connection than 54mbs if your across the house. The router is suppose to automatically adjust this for you and base it how far you are away from it. You can set it to always broadcast at 54mbs or whatever you want in the router's config.

 

 

 

To get to the router's config type in "192.168.1.1" and the settings should be under wireless, all routers are different so you will have to find it from here.
