Svchost crazy on startup

I've got a problem with svchost[Caution: Executable File] on my laptop.

 

 

 

When I first boot Vista and log in, svchost will sit there pinging my hard drive for about 5-10 minutes, slowing the computer. I checked the Reliability and Performance Monitor and it reports svchost using between 1-5mb a second, and my hard drive light is flashing like crazy.

 

 

 

After about 5-10 minutes however, it all stops and I can continue using my computer as per normal.

 

 

 

Is there any way I can fix this or will I just have to put up with it?

Well svchost can be pretty much anything on Vista. It's a generic process that Vista uses to run services.

 

 

 

Is this noticeable slowing or are you just thinking it's slowing down the computer because of all the hard drive activity? If it's the later then it's probably just superfetch working to cache your programs. You can turn that off but I would not recommend it because it will make Vista a lot less responsive.

No it is noticeable slowing. Things take a bit longer to open and get going, but you can link that to the fact they have to access the hard drive as well and svchost is also accessing it at the same time.

Do you have SuperFetch enabled? If so that is most likely what is hitting the hard drive so much. SuperFetch is set up to preload programs you use frequently so they load faster directly from RAM instead of having to spool up the harddrive to load them. That would also explain why programs load slightly slower during those 5 to 10 minutes because they aren't preloaded yet.

Well, if it loads them into RAM to be quicker, I'll happily wait the 5-10 minutes to get everything running smoother.
