Can I use a wild pie to boost my slayer or does the base level need to be 56 ?

You can boost. You may need to boost a few times though just incase your level falls below 56 again.

It's better not to do the quest though, unless you're after the cape, as it has no really good rewards and unlocks some annoying slayer monsters.

I wouldn't boost, it becomes too much of a hassle, but if you don't mind, go ahead.
