Well, obviousl it depends on the connection you have, but I did a test using my cable... I downloaded the google toolbar (536kb) in 13.4 seconds I uploaded that same file it to gmail in 25.4 seconds So its a notch quicker then twice as slow as downloading. Keep in mind though that that download speed is quicker then usual seeing as though it was from google.com, the faster servers I know. In reality uploaded to gmail is probably just as fast as downloading from some 3rd party sites or Kazaa.

A lot of the harddrives on the google servers are a result of overestimation of google/internet site growth in 2001/2002 as the company bought thousands and thousands of hard drives it now doesn't need as it has enough for indexing and caching the current sites and spidering for more. So they're putting them to use rather than just dumping them in a warehouse.

I mean, would they get mad if you recieved 100mb of emails everyday to? Also, two things: - Make a new Gmail account to store stuff on, otherwise your inbox might get cluttered - I'm not sure of the practically of storing gigs of files on Gmail, I intend to use it to replace my floppy drive, just use it to transfer documents to other computers that you use.

Yes, but this system makes it a *lot* more practical to start using things like this for filesharing and/or "FTP"-like archives. Which wasn't the point - GMail doesn't limit file attachments to 10MB for no reason at all ;)

Plus google dont make money this way. with this system id have over a terabyte of remote storage i dout their going to let me have that for free when otheres are charging thousands of dollars amonth for that sort of remote storage. ~Dan64AuSince 27 Aug 2002
May 28, 200521 yr so could you upload a 20 MB runescape movie to there and link people to it? because the current google video thing is horrible, i submitted videos 2 weeks ago and they havent been verified. yet. and my sitesled account wont get validated by the admins :( im stuck.

I don't think you can link into your gmail account, except when you want to give your username and password away. I'm giving it a try though, looks nice. Member of #darkwebz.
