Looking to Build a Computer

Well, here's the deal. I've knows my computer has been total crap for ages, essentially since I bought it out of the box 4 and a half years ago for 300$. Haha. Soo, finally I've put enough money aside to build a new one. One catch; I don't know a single thing about building them haha. I know the basic essential parts, but still not all of them. I'm planning to build one at the same time as my uncle so we have a little project to do together, so it's not like I'm going to be completely hopeless in the connecting and placement department, he knows what he's doing. But I really would like you guys to help me with parts. Really I know nothing over the essentials; Motherboard, Hard Drive, Processor, Disc Drive, Graphics Card etc, etc etc. If I could get some full list, along with some examples that add up to my price range, I would be forever in your debt. Newegg is where I am looking to buy the parts. 600-700 USD is my budget. Your help would be very appreciated, thank you.

This is assuming you won't need a monitor. (and it'll shave off prices a bit too if you don't need other parts like CD drive)

Motherboard $70

CPU: Core2Duo E7200 $130

GPU: Radion HD4850 $175

RAM: 4GB Corsair $96

HD: 750GB 7200rpm $130

Case: $65

CD/DVD drive/burner: $23

Total: $689 USD

Only problem is that I didn't include an OS, do you have a copy of windows already? Also it may be wise, if you can stretch your budget a little bit, to opt for a better motherboard. This one had some good reviews and seemed solid on newegg, but I don't have much experience with various motherboards.

The upside is that with the core2duo (easily OC'd) and HD4850 you can run pretty much anything you throw at it. I know ATI isn't a choice a lot of people choose these days, but the HD4850 pretty much rapes the 8800GT, and IIRC, does better than the 9800 in benchmarks too.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry.

I was out of town for a week or so and when I get back my computer won't connect to servers. Had to end up reformatting. Lovely. Well; huge thank you nadril. I think I have access to both XP and Vista OS. Not sure which I'd use yet. I like the downgrade to xp for easiness and reliability, but no DX10 so yeah.

Question on all the parts. Are all cables, fans, wiring etc included? Or do I need to buy them separate?

Sorry for late reply, again.

Everything you need to plug the components into the motherboard is included.

You might need to buy the Fan though, im not too sure about that

All of the parts you need should be included in Nadril's package. If you want, you can buy aftermarket fans but because you are not building an extremely powerful, extremely power hungry rig the factory standard ones should do fine.

You need to add a PSU to that build. Apart from that is a good one.

Hah, yeah I do. I was wracking my brain because I knew I missed something.

Thermaltank 550W $109.

Not sure if there is a better, cheaper one, around there. Went with Thermaltank because I've had experience with em.

Well. Now this is getting to ~800$ and I would like to try to spend no more than 700 USD. I do have OS discs so those are not needed. Any downgrades or other options that would bring it down about 100$ with the addition of the Power Supply Unit. I'm total crap with deciding this stuff because I have minimal experience. I don't need to run anything huge on it. WoW is my main deal. Some discounts on items seem to have disappeared as well. I dunno. I'm just terrible with this.

Was trying to find some alternatives.

RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565? 2 1GB Sticks 55$ (35$ after rebate)

Hard Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073 500GB 7200 RPM 80$ (75$ after rebate)

I don't really know what else. I was looking at cases.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208008 80$ (70$ after rebate) with 450Watt Power Supply included. Is 450 too weak? Seems to have a lot of fans as well.

OEM Means no cables? Yes? If so, where do I get the cables? Just a local computer store?

How will I be positive all the parts will work together? I've heard of issues with parts not being compatible etc.

I'm looking to order this soon, so I'd like to get a final list of everything together.

The ram looks really cheap. I'd go with corsair at the least if you downgrade it.

HD is fine.

And a 450w PSU is too weak. You really need like 550w-600w.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034

Is that looking any better? Is 2x 1GB better than 1x 2GB?

Your MoBO - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186125 90$

Your CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115052 130$

Your GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103060 175$

New RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034 33$

New HD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073 75$

Your Disc Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118012 26$

Your PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153051 109$

That comes to 638$. The case you listed is 85$, not 65$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156078&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL070108. If I got that it would be 723$. The one I listed is 60$ after rebatehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208008 has PSU, but I'd be replacing it. Would it be better to get the case I listed, and just replace the PSU? Or is there something significant in the case you listed that makes it superior? Or is there another case all together; hopefully between 50$-60$ that you would suggest. After case is chosen, will these be all of the internal parts that I need?

The case I listed was mostly just because I thought it was cool.

I would look around on newegg and find a case w/o a PSU in it. You can prob get one for $45-50 and it'll be better quality than one that throws in a shoddy PSU.
