Alternatively, you could pay a gardener 200gp and (s)he will clear the patch and supercompost it for you, but you won't get the tree roots this way. The farmer doesn't supercompost a patch after its choped, I had a supercompost in my inventory to double check.

Before, while I was still working on 99 Farming, when you paid the farmer, the compost you last used would remain there. I believe this was fixed a while back, and the only reason that it wasn't fixed sooner was that only a select few knew about this, let alone being able to pay a farmer to cut a tree for you.
