Everything in this post is assuming nothing has changed since I left Staff in June.

These cases are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Not all spammers are given a ban, for instance. It depends on the severity of the spamming.

Bumping old topics is not against the rules if the user is contributing to the thread. But if a user bumps an old topic with "Bump" or a similar useless comment, their reply is removed or the thread is locked. However if that same user bumps MULTIPLE old topics with a spammy/useless reply, then the person in question is usually warned or given a temporary ban (depending upon the severity of their actions).

I'd say the current policies are perfect.

Since that was only two cases, I personally wouldn't give the user anymore than a warning - if that. If the person stopped bumping posts after that, then it's no big deal. But sometimes people just need a reminder of the rules. And another thing that you have to realize is that you don't know what goes on behind-the-scenes. Whenever a user is warned/temporarily banned, there is not a huge message on their profile that says "THIS USER WAS WARNED ON [X DATE] FOR [X REASON]."

Yes the same person bumped two threads, but two honestly isn't a big deal. If it were me, I'd probably wait until 3 or 4 before handing out a warning. And if this user you mentioned had CONTINUED bumping old threads after Lionheart's post asking him to stop, then his actions would merit further action.

The problem is, multi-year bumping is too common, I could find a handful more threads of multi-year bumps that don't contribute.

I'd say that in most cases, the person who bumps an old thread doesn't realize it's against the rules (or that it's an old thread at all!!). How often do you really check dates on threads? I'd say most people don't. In fact, sometimes people reply to an old thread and then when they check back later, they realize "Oh oops, I didn't realize it was so old."

So even the Staff did increase the punishment, it probably wouldn't do any good.. because most people don't know what the concequences are before bumping the thread.

It's common sense most times, If I see a post by Bubsa, I automatically know that thread is old so I wouldn't bump, the rest of Tipit needs to learn that.

You cannot expect everyone to memorize which threads are old just because you know them. Not everybody frequently reads the same threads you do or knows the same people. It would be ridiculous to punish users severily because they didn't realize a thread was old. It is very easy to distinguish between someone trolling and spamming old threads on purpose and someone who made a genuine mistake. Spammers are always dealt with but not if they do not continue with their actions after being asked to (like the user you pointed out).

Can you please not remove all content from your original post? It ruins the point of keeping old threads on TIF. Even though your point may have been contested or your idea may have been shot down, it would be helpful for other users to read in the future. I would have almost certainly participated in this thread had I known what was in your original post.
