ATI and Nvidia differances

Featured Replies

Im about to buy a new computer from a local buildshop and i have a question about ATI and Nvidia, what are the differances?

Im not too concerned about high end performance, i dopc game but i dont wnat it to run DX10 games for example.

Also what are your reccomendations on there respective videocards?

From experience I found that while ATI cards are usually cheaper than Nvidia, Nvidia cards have better support, and the drivers are less confusing. I've had bad experiences with the catalyst software that ATI offers; it caused crashing problems on several graphically demanding games.

What's your budget though, and what's the wattage rating on the psu you're buying?

Also, anything that is designed for Direct X 10 should be backwards compatible. I don't think there are any games that only run using Direct3D 10 yet.

ATI used to beat Nvidia in the 98xx to X1xx series ( If i recall correctly, maybe earlier) and after AMD took over them, their high products started to fall behind Nvidia's top range (HD2900), however now ATI's new 48xx series are giving Nvidia's GTX series a run for their money being able to compete and even beat their Nvidia counterparts while being alot cheaper.

Eggz coverd it well.

ATI's 3xxx series was/is really good too in performance/money.

The most price-worthy now is anything from ATI's 4xxx series if you're looking onto having serious quality-gaming. Otherwise you can choose a slower ATI/Nvidia card if you don't need extremely much performance.

They both are good companies.

Say a budget and a couple of games you like to play, and i'll give you a couple of options on both ATI/Nvidia cards. A DX10/.1 card will run fine with DX9.
