pryomancer
Probably just wear on the controllers. I had a problem with the shoulder buttons on my controllers. I don't think there's anything you can do to fix them, if the connections have broken etc. New ones are pretty cheap now, probably only about £10-£15 each, maybe less. Tom_Servo
You could try to take it apart and possibly fix it yourself. If you are lucky a little part just came out of alignment and you can move it back in. I managed to salvage a N64 controller with a broken joystick and L-button. Chances are, though, that you won't be able to fix it, but it never hurts to try and it's already broken so you have nothing to lose.

ClareJonsson
Take them apart and clean the contacts, it's probably just dust. [Assist-X]
