New video card, sound suddenly disabled

Featured Replies

Today I bought a new video card, and graphically, everything's fine. The stripes on my screen are gone, everything looks good again, hooray-hooray. However, I'm no longer getting any sound. At all.

I've made sure everything's connected to where it should be, I've followed the troubleshooter, installed it, everything I can think of. When I go to control panel, under sound, there is no default device listed. The "properties" menu says the device is active, the "use audio features" is selected, but none of it works. The device manager says the device is enabled, but hasn't been started. So what can I do? Do I just need to start the device, and if so, how do I go about doing that?

Are you using a sound card or onboard sound?

I'm not sure. What exactly is onboard sound, and how do I check for that?

Edit: I think it's onboard sound.

Its onboard if its plugged into the motherboard ie. the cluster of connections in the upper-mid of the back of your PC, if you are using a sound card, the sound connectors should be plugged much below just like how the monitor is connected to your video card.

Onboard sound is directly onto your motherboard, while a sound card would be a separate card (much like your video card) except for sound.

Go to the device manager > sound devices and show me a screenshot of what is there.

Only thing I can really think of is to try and disable the ATI Function Driver for Audio.. seems like it might be conflicting with something.

You can always turn it back on if it doesn't work.

Nope, didn't work. What I'm really thinking about, though, is that in the device manager, under properties, it says the driver is enabled, but not started. Do you know if I need to start it and how I do that? That could be the problem.

What kind of computer do you have? Like, if it's prebuilt what is the machine (like XPS 510 or w/e). Trying to figure out which of those is your actual sound card.

Plus maybe you need to update the drivers, just a guess.

It's a Dimension 8300.

And I tried updating the drivers, but it didn't work.

Hmm well your sound according to dell is Analog Devices AD1980 AC97 Codec

I really have no clue whats going on with it, trying to google for an answer but I'm just getting people with a problem and not an answer...

The only thing I can think of is that I either messed up installing the drivers somehow, or I need to start them. I'm looking that up.
