English help (assignment)

Featured Replies

Hello Tip.it,

for my english assignment I have to do a speech on 3 pieces of text (as in something that conveys meaning) and how they relate to me as a young Australian. I have chosen my first text, the poem Middleton's Rouseabout by Henrey Lawson, I chose it as I wanted to have a contrast between what Australia was like back then, and what it is like now. So what I am asking from you guys is to help me find a second and third text as I cannot find anything good. I would prefer one of them to be a modern poem on Australian society/life so I can show the aforementioned contrast. I also need the third text to NOT be a poem.

Please help!

Does it have to be Australian literature? If not then you can easily write heaps on the bible.

and if they say he can't use the bible he can claim they are being anti-religious and are denying him his rights

Try Tomorrow, When the War Began. Great text, easy to read and lots to write on it. I love that book and couldn't put it down. In fact, try you could see if you can nail three texts in one, by summarising the whole series. Of it doesn't work pick the Ellie Chronicles. Not as exciting but good nevertheless. By the same author, it depicts what happens after the war. Either that, or some obscure Tasmanian Sci Fi book :twss:

Have you tried Yahtzee at Zero Punctuation? Just kidding. I'm not australian so i wouldn't know where to begin, but try looking for something about what you think your town, city or wherever will be like in the future too, and how you can relate to it or what you see as feasible or not.

Dorothy Mackellar, I love a Sunburnt Country (I don't think that's the actual name of the poem, but it's very famous). You could run with the whole patriotism thing, feeling attached to the uniqueness and variety within our country, which in turn reflects the population and our culture. You could show that the ideals of Australians haven't changed much in terms of patriotism over the years, that being an Australian is synonymous with accepting a multicultural population. Appreciating what is around you without any notion of prejudice is key, and that it is something that will need to be kept alight within future generations as Australia becomes more and more multicultural. Yeah, just throwing ideas around...
