September 3, 200817 yr ok well recently (within the last month) my pc (well, my family pc) has became gradually more Laggy. About 2 weeks ago i started getting boot errors (one was Disk read error - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to retry) as well as other errors related to my BIOS. Somehow PXE became enabled so every now and then the pc would try and boot from a server and fail (which was fixed thanks to the help of these forums), and at the same time (i assume, not quite sure) the floppy drive controller got enabled in the BIOS even though the pc doesn't have a floppy (which was also fixed thanks to these forums). I assumed maybe something weird happened and it re-enabled or my brother or someone else in the house decided to investigate what pressing F8 (i think) on start up does and had a play around. About 3 days ago windows started taking ages to boot from the XP loading logo. Yesterday when i booted up (this also happened once about 2 weeks ago, and found a couple of errors and fixed them apparently) windows started running a chkdsk (check disk i assume). I skipped it because i was in a rush. As long as starting to take ages to boot when it finally does boot (you get to the logon screen) you cant scroll over or click on the names for the first 5 or 10 seconds (you can but they don't highlight when scrolled over and don't select ready to enter the password when clicked). I've never seen this before. Also occasionally (im fairly sure) it will make a quick beep sound sometime while it is lagging (from the actual pc case, not the speakers). When you finally logon there is really bad boot lag for the first 15 seconds (and it still laggy for the next couple of minutes), by really bad i mean windows seems to be running at about 3 fps and clicking the start menu may as well mean go and get a coffee. This is only for the first 15 seconds or so, and it has never been that bad. It also sometimes makes a beep sound the same as described above when logging on. Here are my specs (the pc is about 3 years old i think, a bit less maybe): Win XP Media center edition 2005 Intel P4 630 3.0GHZ processor 2GB DDR ram (it was 512mb, i upgraded it 6 months ago) 160gb HDD 7200rpm (ill open the case and check brand if anyone needs to know, im not sure what it is) ATI Radeon X300SE graphics card (128mb) Integrated Intel High Definition 5.1 sound Here is a HijackThis log (taken just minutes ago just after i logged on and experienced the beeps and extreme lag for a few seconds): [hide=Hijackthis Log]Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 4:24:12 PM, on 3/09/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\services[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService[Caution: Executable File] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Intel\IDU\awServ[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\Explorer[Caution: Executable File] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\COMODO\Firewall\cmdagent[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\slserv[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtSrv[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Virtual CD v4 SDK\system\vcssecs[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\ALCWZRD[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas[Caution: Executable File] C:\apps\ABoard\ABoard[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32[Caution: Executable File] C:\apps\ABoard\AOSD[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Intel\IDU\iptray[Caution: Executable File] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgemc[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Intel\IDU\awtray[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\COMODO\Firewall\cfp[Caution: Executable File] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jusched[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\WhatPulse\WhatPulse[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jucheck[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox[Caution: Executable File] C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchProtocolHost[Caution: Executable File] C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis[Caution: Executable File] R1 - Much thanks for all your help.
September 3, 200817 yr Author Ok well i started the virus scan in safe mode. it was going for a while and i came back and found a BSOD The error was a KERNAL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR I found the line with all the codes and it was this: ***STOP: 0x00000077 (0xC0000185, 0xC0000185, 0x00000000, 0x01236000) I done some googling to open the mini dump file created. I opened it with WinDBG (which i had to download) and looked through all the stuff it said. i found a line that said: Unable to load image ntoskrnl[Caution: Executable File], Win32 error 0n2 as well as a block of lines that say: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR (77) The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Caused by bad block in paging file or disk controller error. In the case when the first arguments is 0 or 1, the stack signature in the kernel stack was not found. Again, bad hardware. An I/O status of c000009c (STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR) or C000016AL (STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED) normally indicates the data could not be read from the disk due to a bad block. Upon reboot autocheck will run and attempt to map out the bad sector. If the status is C0000185 (STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR) and the paging file is on a SCSI disk device, then the cabling and termination should be checked. See the knowledge base article on SCSI termination. Arguments: Arg1: c0000185, status code Arg2: c0000185, i/o status code Arg3: 00000000, page file number Arg4: 01236000, offset into page file Im going to go off and try and Google all this information to see what i can find out. Also, lag has not reduced apon startup and it still beeps every now and then (when it lags)
September 3, 200817 yr Author Ok looking at google it is a error reading data from the paging file on the hard drive into the ram, or the master boot record is infected with a virus. :wall: According the the KB article here the I/O status code (0x0000185) means: "0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR: improper termination or defective cabling of SCSI-based devices, or two devices attempting to use the same IRQ." Ill go and try and run a chkdsk and be back with the results
September 3, 200817 yr I can tell you that you pry didn't load the symbols into WinDbg right first off. You can find more information on windows debugger with this guide. When i get some spare time i will get more info on this issue. You could try reflashing your BIOS to the latest version. How often is this happening to you? I found this off a quick google if you want you can take a look at that article.
September 3, 200817 yr Author ran disc check (start > run > "cmd" > chkdsk /r > *restart computer* > *wait*). When i first done it it got everything done fine, upto 32% in either the 2nd or 3rd stage (2nd im fairly sure. i think it was verifying indexes) when it made a few beeps and locked up. Restarted PC and it made quite a few beeps (i mean probably more then 10. probebly half a second in duration each and about a second apart). it finally did boot though. Disc check ran and completed with no problems. At the end though it had to: "Repairing USN Journal file record segment" I looked around google a bit and a few sites said i can disable the USN journal (even though it will probably not be the cause of my problem?). If it is safe to disable it, how do i do so, and could it be possibly causing my problem (would it be worth trying)? I can tell you that you pry didn't load the symbols into WinDbg right first off. Ill first try run a virus scan again and if there's anything ill get rid of it and run another disc check. If that doesn't work ill try re flash my BIOS Thanks for all your help so far :D
September 3, 200817 yr Ok jsut post back letting us know here at TIF what worked and what didn't so we can then further trouble shoot.
September 4, 200817 yr Author ok ran virus scan. no viruses (that it found) just 2 "tracking cookies". Didn't bother with bios update since i had like version .29 and the only version for my board i could find was .27 (i tryed looking at the manufactures website, and they only had .27). I remember updating this about a year ago anyway. When i booted up today and logged in my computer froze like it does and started beeping. the start menu would not load and it done a couple of cycle of beeps (probably about 10 beeps per try) before it eventually did load. Im thinking its maybe a issue with my memory so im gunna try run memtest86 Also im disabling the windows search index feature that i got from windows update a few days ago because it is really anoying and i dont want it. dont think its related to my problems though
