halo2_rocks7
Hello all. I'm planning on building a computer now, and I have all the parts, but I'm been wondering about a few things. Specs: Intel e8400 3.0Ghz CPU Asus P5Q-e Motherboard Arctic Silver 5 Thermal paste OCZ Vendetta 2 HSF Antec P182 case Problem #1: [hide=Thanks OldJoe!]First of all (and I'll add things until I'm done building the computer), how much thermal paste do I put on my CPU? I know how to put it on, but what I don't know is how much. If anyone could provide pictures, or anything else, I'd be really grateful. Thank you.[/hide] Problem #2: [hide=Thanks again OldJoe!]My case manual says that before I install the motherboard, I have to install the stand-offs. Any idea what this means?[/hide] Progress: Windows left! \ Can someone help me with my BIOS? For my SATA drives, it asks whether I want to run them in IDE, RAID, or AHCI. I know not to run RAID, as I'm only running one HDD, but does AHCI work in Vista? Should I set up my HDD to run as ACHI or IDE before Windows installation? OldJoe
A little dot in the middle of the CPU Here's a good guide on how to build a computer - http://www.nordichardware.com/Guides/?p ... ivelse=432 A bit old, but the principals are the same. halo2_rocks7
Do I need to spread the paste? Or just put a tiny dab and put the HSF on top? Btw, the bottom of my HSF looks like so: Thanks Jason321 for the sig!^ Proud to have served the Tip.it Crew Drops: 2x D Chain, 1x D Legs, 2x D Left Half, 1x D spear, 2x D med (monsters), 5x D Med (Barrows), 4x D Axe, 2x Zerker, Abyssal whip x1, 7x D BootsBarrows items: 55 (not counting the meds)
OldJoe
A click like that will be enough, the cooler placed on top will even out the paste. (if you're unsure it's looking good, lift up the cooler again and check the spread) I think Arctic Silver have a guide about paste on their webpage. halo2_rocks7
They do, but they say to put a thin line vertically: Thanks Jason321 for the sig!^ Proud to have served the Tip.it Crew Drops: 2x D Chain, 1x D Legs, 2x D Left Half, 1x D spear, 2x D med (monsters), 5x D Med (Barrows), 4x D Axe, 2x Zerker, Abyssal whip x1, 7x D BootsBarrows items: 55 (not counting the meds)

OldJoe
It depends on how big the cpu is, but normally a little dot should be enough. It's what i've done anyways. A line like that would work too.
halo2_rocks7
K just making sure 'cause a lot of people say to put a dot in the middle and then spread it across the heatspreader with a finger/card. So, just put a dot in the middle and put the HSF on, then push it down and tighten it (in my case, it's push-pins)? OldJoe
I'm no expert, only done it twice. But i followed the guide on NordicHardware and it worked for me. The CPU should be fastend in the motherboard first, then the paste and then fan. But it also depends on what paste you bought. If the paste is more "hard flowing" (i'm not english, so excuse that expression. some paste's are more loose than other) a credit card as you said, could be used instead. But whatever you got, it should be a plane and thin layer. halo2_rocks7
K thanks OldJoe! I applied the thermal paste, and installed the HSF. Now, I'm trying to install the motherboard. However, the case manual says to install the stand-offs, then install the motherboard....What's a stand-off? halo2_rocks7
Yeah well, I fail at searching. I have fixed the problem. Thanks again OldJoe! There was a fan about 1.5 inches from where the wires came out of the power supply that really worried me. Looked like they would chew up the wires. However, I figured out I could remove the fan. Now, I don't have to buy another intake fan...just use that one. The CPU, HSF, RAM, Mobo, and HDD are installed. Just need to do the Video card, DVD burner, jumpers, and necessary wires, then I'm ready to install Windows! \ Thanks Jason321 for the sig!^ Proud to have served the Tip.it Crew Drops: 2x D Chain, 1x D Legs, 2x D Left Half, 1x D spear, 2x D med (monsters), 5x D Med (Barrows), 4x D Axe, 2x Zerker, Abyssal whip x1, 7x D BootsBarrows items: 55 (not counting the meds)

Doomster
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview ... erthread=y http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_H ... _Interface Looks like you would do well to install in AHCI mode, with the drive jumpered for SATA 2 (depending on the drive, this may mean removing a SATA 1 compatibility jumper if present, or setting a SATA 2 mode jumper). It may be as well to have the Intel Chipset drivers unpacked to a floppy (if there is one), or maybe a flash drive would work, though Vista should apply generic AHCI support - in which case, apply the Intel update afterwards. http://support.asus.com/download/downlo ... odel=P5Q-E You may need the non-auto version from Intel http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... bmit=Go%21 To allow for unpacking rather than installing.
