When you're wielding the pole, the rats auto-attach themselves and you see a notification in your chat window informing you that you've attached a rat to your rat pole. You can also see them, especially on high definition if you zoom in, or you can remove the rat pole and use the "check" option on it to find out how many rats are attached.
