The Story of the Hatchet

I normally don't write much fan fiction, but I thought that this would make a good story. This is based on a fable by Aesop.

----

Many ages ago, a young woodcutter journeyed into the kingdom of Misthalin. He was determined to be a woodcutter. After working for a while for Farmer Fred, he earned enough gold to buy a steel hatchet, but nothing more. But he worked hard. After cutting some logs, he became more skilled.

But one day, he swung too wildly, and his hatchet fell into the mighty River Lum. He thought about trying to take it back, but the current looked much too dangerous. And so the young woodsman wept, for his career was at an end.

Shortly thereafter, Saradomin, a god of all-knowing, appeared in the river in the form of a water sprite, next to the woodcutter.

"Why are you crying, young one?"

"I lost my steel axe. My career is gone forever."

"Don't be pessimistic. I'll be right back," replied Saradomin.

Moments later, Saradomin produced a rune hatchet.

"Is this yours?"

"No, it's not mine."

Saradomin disappeared into the river again, and popped up again, with an adamantite hatchet. "Is this yours, then?"

"No, it's not mine either," replied the woodcutter, after taking a look.

Saradomin disappeared again, and came up with a steel hatchet. "Surely this must be yours?"

"Yep, this is mine."

Saradomin gave the woodcutter his axe. "Since you were not corrupted by greed, I shall give you the rune and the adamantite axe."

The word had spread around Misthalin, and soon, all of RuneScape.

Another woodcutter, with a mithril axe, decided to test his luck. He went to the river's edge and "accidentally" lost his axe.

Again, Saradomin appeared, with a rune axe.

"Is this yours?"

"Yes, it is! Yes it is!" said the other woodcutter eagerly.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, of course!"

Saradomin scratched his head. "Hmmm.... I believe you have a mithril axe."

Saradomin disappeared, not to be seen again.

----

Moral of the story: Sometimes, it's honesty that results in gains, and greed that results in loss.
