Dr_Roverud
Hey there, I recently acquired an old Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop with nothing really wrong with it, except for the fact that it is outdated. I'm kind of a noob at dealing with computers but I was able to put in 2 1gb RAM sticks instead of the default 2 256mb sticks. Is there any sites (similar http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest) that can scan your computer and tell you what available slots you have and what type of slots they are (pci or AGP, etc); It would be great if a website could scan through your computer and suggest possible upgrades. Oh, and it seems this computer has an integrated graphics card, is there any way I can get around that? And what is the max amount of RAM this computer can upgrade to? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just a technub with a Fry's newspaper page and an old computer.
Skill_Caster
Crucial is a pretty good place for memory upgrade, it's where I buy my RAM. They have a free system scanner via this link. You have to download the scanner, but it tells you available ram slots, etc. You can check out Crucial's WoT rating here.
Laura
Considering the fact that you said old, your computer can only handle 4GB, more specifically a little over 3GB. Yes, you can buy a video card to replace your integrated graphics card.
Nadril
Doing a bit of looking around it seems as if it only supports PCI cards. That means it will not be worth spending any money to upgrade the video card. Also looks like it only supports DDR1 memory, am I correct?
Dr_Roverud
max ram is 2048MB (or 1gb per slot (has 2 slots)). Looks like I won't need to buy anything new (at least for RAM's sake).

If you're considering upgrading at all really, for major changes at least, it should be noted that buying a completely new system will be cheaper long term. Especially with DDR1 as Nadril stated. CNET says: Installed Size 256 MB / 1 GB (max) Technology DDR SDRAM Memory speed 333 MHz Are you sure you're getting 2GB?
Nadril
Have you already put the RAM in? Or what. I'd hate for you to have bought DDR2 ram, which is the standard right now.
Dr_Roverud
yeah, it's old ram from a few years ago. it's 1gb per slot and there are 2 slots. Ah, well.
