For CRTs it might save a minimal amount of power, but LCD displays still are backlit at black, which saves nothing. It's an artifact from an earlier age. Like Altavista :P. We used Blackie way back when the internet was "new" on the market at school. Back then it might have done something besides hurt our eyes, I don't know.
