A more in depth Herb Farming Spreadsheet (google docs)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Introduction

I recently had a discussion with someone on the help and advice section over the best herb to plant. They linked to troacctid's very nice, but slightly lacking guide (link) as I was looking at taking into account more variables.

Why mine and not troacctid's?

Well as I briefly mentioned earlier there was a little things lacking in troacctid's guide/spreadsheet.

1. Lack of auto updating, this means the spreadsheet is always upto date and has accurate data.

2. Death of herbs, troacctid doesn't really take into account this. My spreadsheet takes this into account.

3. Too much colour, I'm one of those people who believes a spread sheet should contain black and white data. Colours distract from the raw data, sure a bit of red here and colour on graphs is needed, but lots of green.....

4. Customization, troacctid's spreadsheet is data with no options to tweak the variables. On mine you can change the death rate, use of super compost and the average crop.

Explanation of the values

There all self explanatory, but if anyone wants to know who I'm calculating anything don't hesitate to ask.

Notes

Please do not change any values apart from the ones listed under variables (please do note edit the super compost price either) as it will lead to issues.

Enjoy

FAQ

Q1) Why include the cost of super compost since everyone uses it?

A1) Well when your low level seeds like guams cost less then a 20th of the cost of super compost it adds a big cost.

This added to the price of the cheaper herbs (like marrentill) increases your sweet point herb (the one which take it from being a break even harvest to a profitable harvest). Like I said before I want this to be as accurate and as user tweakable as possible.

Q2) Where did you get your default figures?

A2) From posts here and on the official forums. If you believe them to the wrong or off slightly either post here or change them for yourself on the spreadsheet.

Q3) Why isn't x item/feature/function on the spreadsheet and/or graph?

A3) The reason its in the beginners guides is that I'm looking for input and suggestions. Post your idea and suggestions here.

Is your average of 7 herbs any more accurate than troacctid's 6.5 with deads calced in?

I don't think your average of 1/10 has been tested either, just a figure that sounds nice and approximately matches the reality.

Supercompost in there is unneccesary, as it's the same for every herb.

Thanks for the reply

I just put 7 in there as I was told that the 6.5 was taking into account death (not sure how true that is).

The advantage of mine is you can put 6.5 in there and it will auto change all the figures to take this into account.

If 6.5 is closer to the true figure then I'll change it to the default.

The 1 in 10 again was taken from a post I saw, this like the average can be changed and all the figures will chance accordingly.

I've had a quick look over the forums and the death rate is between 1 in 8 to 1 in 10, so 1 in 10 is and acceptable figure, but again you can change this.

The super compost is relevant as if your herb dies you loose the cost of the super compost, in the case of ranarrs and snapdragon this isn't too noticeable, but with herbs which cost less (guams for example) then the cost of a super compost then its very relevant.

The whole reason I made this spreadsheet is the small things which people forget and how much of an effect they have on the results.

Its okay saying the average is x the cost of the seed is y, the value of the herbs is z so the result is (x*z)-y. But when you add death, cost of extras (or essentials depending on the person) and changing prices its not so simple.

This is the reasoning behind this, it takes out all hard work, makes it tweakable and shows it in a simple fashion.

PS. I've just noticed I've screwed up the sharing settings which is why you can't edit it. I've just fixed this so you can now change the values, like was originally intended.

Thanks D Jay99 for making me notice that.

I farmed about 400 toadflax seeds once, the plan was 2k but couldn't stand not selling the herbs :P

The average harvest over those 400 seeds was 6.64 herbs/seed (so 7.32 not counting dead herbs), and a total of 37 seeds died. The average fell under 6.5 a few times but always got back up again due to a few extremely good harvests (my best run was a total of 55 herbs off 5 patches  ).

I'm still not entirely sure if it matters what kind of herb seed it is, snaps seem to die more often than toadflax, but that can also be my imagination, as snap seeds are quite a lot more expensive then toadflax seeds so it's a bigger loss of money.

The profit profit per herb run gets even higher if you farm marigolds (if you don't supercompost, about 60% dies, so about 4-5k extra profit) and cactus spines (about 6.5k profit) every herb run too.
