Can I sell steel bars?

Featured Replies

I'm planning to buy some coal and iron ore and smelt them into steel bars to get my smithing up to the same level as my mining. But are steel bars in high enough demand to sell a large number of them easily?

Yes, there used for cannonballs and smithing.

Yeah they ought to change that. So they'll sell no problem? Instantly maybe?

Yeah steel bar making is a good way to get smithing experience for profit. The easiest part about the whole process will be selling them. They are constantly in demand.

Good. It's going to be long and dreadful though. I hate smelting. It's much worse than the smithing or mining part of the entire process.

EDIT: On a side note, to anyone who might find this useful, making steel bars takes less time than making mithril bars and it also makes more profit in large quantities (in my situation, anyway).

you make 9 steel bars /invo thats (all prices are mid btw)

iron-102

coal-179

mith-260

steel bar-628

mith bar-1177

steel bar-168gp/bar

mith bar-201gp/bar

1 invo of steel bars-9 bars~1512gp

1 invo of mith bars-5mith 1 steel-1173

BUT it only takes 2/3 of the time...

therefore steel bars and miths bars are pretty much equal except you gain a bit more xp with steel bars

overall mith bars are better than steel...you just need 50 smithing to make

In my situation, steel would make about 1.3mil more profit.

Two coal and one iron ore will cost me 460 gp.

Four coal and one mithril will cost me 976 gp.

I need to make roughly 27k steel bars or 16k mithril bars.

One steel bar sells for 628 gp, that's 168 profit per bar.

One mithril bar sells for 1,177 gp, that's 201 profit per bar.

Steel: 27k times 168 = 4,536,000 profit

Mithril: 16k times 201 = 3,216,000 profit

So for the money, steel would definately be the better option. As far as speed, mithril might be better but there's another argument for steel.

Steel gets 9 bars per run, so that's 27k/9= 3000 runs

Mithril gets 5 bars per run, so that's 16k/5= 3200 runs

This is not a big difference, but I hate having to walk back and forth so I value fewer runs over speed. The smelting itself only requires 2 clicks anyway. Plus, the time it takes actually smelting the bars is a nice litle break for me, rather than an annoying wait.

you forgot to factor that you can make a steel bar within every single invo of mith bars...

I know that but I think that wouldn't be worth the effort of having to click a bunch more times. I don't know, maybe it is. Would that change much?
