Runescape lag-switch?

hello, as many of you have heard (or seen)- many console gamers are starting to use lag-switches to gain an unfair advantage over other players, especially in fps games such as halo, COD, and GOW.

recently, a friend who plays quite a bit of xbox using a lag switch asked me an interesting question

it went something like this:

"what if you used this lag switch in runescape to have a pwnage kill to death ratio"

well, he stopped playing runescape several years ago so he isn't up on how things work, but he brought up a good point;

would a lag switch give a player any type of advantage in runescape?

i understand that it is against the rules, and since i use wireless internet, i wouldn't test one. i'm sure some 360 junkies have tried them, what are your thoughts?

i am not promoting or encouraging rule breaking.

Doesn't work. All code is run server sided and clients simply send the commands and stream the responses from the server. It's why it runs so well on low end PCs (all the client has to do is render the objects in the defined parameters), but the server load is significant. It's the only way to handle disconnects and lag [bleep]es, which keeps RS running on dial up or very poor connections. So no, it wouldn't offer any sort of advantage - it'd be a huge disadvantage, in fact.

Far from "starting" to use, network manipulation to gain an advantage on consoles has been around since 2001 when people played xbox games over the internet using things like XBConnect or GameSpyTunnel. From personal experience I saw it used in 1999 for C&C Tiberian Sun and I know it was used in StarCraft in 1998.

Theres no such thing as a lag switch, but there are many different ways to interfere with a connection. Examples:

-"Bridging" a connection to force all traffic to go through one person's connection

-(D)DOS'ing a person's connection to cause latency and possibly drop them from the game

-Using Linux to generate random packets to cause lag

-Some routers/modems have a standby button, which in some games would allow only your actions to count for a limited amount of time

-and others

All of these rely on client-to-client connections, but Runescape is entirely client-to-server connections

You make it sound like running through a few level 87 monsters is hard which it really shouldn't be at your level.

As said above, the server handles all processing. Unless you can start messing with it, you wont be able to override the action limit and cause these "massive kills to death ratio". (Which makes him sound like a FPS junkie, all the more he doesnt know what hes talking about with runescape)
