Quinn's guide to Warped Tortoises

Well I've had these as a slayer quest, and I made around 500K in 3 hours work. They also became one of my favourite monsters. The reason I make this guide is because you can make good money here, and its a diversion from all the other monsters.

Advised Skills

50 smithing (youll receive a lot of mithril ores if you mine the coal yourself to bar them you can make around 50-100k more each hour. You can also just use the coals you drop for this, but they drop more mithril ores then coal.)

55 magic (I made a mistake not to bring alch runes, and thus losing 50k in 3 hours.)

70+ attack, defence and strength (they will hit way to much when lower, lowering your profit drastically.

58 slayer and partial completion of the path of glouphrie quest (you must have gotten to the point where you can enter the caves.)

I suggest you finish the quest, youll benefit from it and you receive 20k free slayer xp. With spirit trees it takes you 1 minute to get there and another minute if you want to sell everything to the GE or bank. Running there from castle wars, grappling the tree and running inside just takes to long.

Why Warped Tortoises

First of all theyre good money makers. Theyre making me around 200K an hour. Although I might be able to make more with higher stats, a bunyip or a pack yak or just with some more luck!

Youre probably still thinking what makes them so good to kill They have a good chance to drop blue charms, they drop tortoise shells more often then the normal tortoises, drop a lot of mithril ore, drop a lot of tar, and have a good chance to drop rune pickaxes/battleaxes. Their other drops are worth 600gp-3,1K gp.

You can also go there for decent xp. They should give anything between 45-60k xp an hour with 70 attack.

Inventory

The first thing you check BEFORE going to these is if you have the chimes. Ive seen some people having to return to the bank because they forgot them. Never forget your food though. Even people above level 110 combat get hit a lot here. Also use placeholders for their noted mithril ore, coal and tar drops. For people who like cabbages bring a placeholder for them to. Another thing you should never forget are your fire and natures runes. I strongly suggest using fire runes because you dont want to end up alching your god sword or whip, its not the first time someone would accidentally alch their whip, god sword or other valuable weapons.

Never use prayer pots! It's definitely not worth using them as the food will be way cheaper, and you are on a 2 minute walk from the GE (way less if you run)

How to get there

If you finished the path of glouphrie quest you teleport to the spirit tree on the mountains east of the poison waste. Otherwise teleport to castle wars, run around the south wall, grapple the tree like in the quest and enter the caves. I suggest taking the first 2 in the caves, the other secluded 2 are very far away from the entrance and you will end up eating a lot of food because of the warped terrorbirds.

The ones circled in red are the best spots. If you use the other spots, you'll get annoyed by terrorbirds who will always team up against you.

Setup

These are the most convenient setups and will provide you with the most profit. With other setups you end up attacking slower and dealing less damage

- Guthans

Guthing is one of the cheaper ways to kill them and require less food then the other ways. 5 monks just to be on the safe side. Guthans wont always heal you when you want it.

- God Sword

I dont have a God Sword but it just makes killing these so easy. Expect to kill them in 5-6 blows maximum.

- whip + toktz-ket-xil/rune defender

This is the cheapest setup. You dont have to repair your armour, its cheaper then a godsword and you still get to use a shield for more defence. Lower levels might benefit from the extra defence

Fighting them

Before you attack them, use your chimes on them, this will make them vulnerable to any of your attack styles. When his hp bar is about half health, use them another time, I strongly advise this because Ive seen a lot of people hitting zeros for over a minute because they forgot about using them again.

Test rounds

I made some screen shots of two rounds following up on each other. if you don't believe me check the times in the bottem. First round started at 22:00 my time. so a little over 30 mins for the first. 30 for the second. i started on 23:36, that's after selling everything to GE.

FAQ

Question: Why dont you provide ranging or maging information on killing these?

Answer: There are no safe spots and even with high defence and ranging you would take to many hits to make a good amount of money. Same counts for magic, and your runes would cost a lot for each kill.

Question: I cant make that many money as you in the same period of time.

Answer: Check if youre using the chimes correctly, this is the most important factor in killing these. Try another run just to be sure. Maybe you just had bad drops.

Credits

First of all thanks to Jagex for putting these wonderful creatures in, to all the players who forgot their chimes, all the players who where friendly enough to close the gates between terrorbirds and tortoises. Thanks to those people who alched their whips and dark bows so that i finally got a way to use my fire runes up. And off course to tip.it for providing the map.

Theres probably a lot of spelling mistakes hiding around there and a lot of unfinished work. When i update it will include a one trip droplist and more pictures (everyone loves pictures.).

Seems very click intensive with all of the chimes and such but good guide and are you sure its not a good idea to range?

yes it's very click intensive, and there are no safespots. If you don't need them, i guess you could range them, but you would get hit often.

There ARE safespots... There are too many people who believe otherwise and are totally wrong. The northeast and southeast corners of the area with two tortoises are safespots due to the columns along the walls that come out 1 square. Can't provide a pic atm since I'm nowhere near there, but test it out yourself and add it to the guide ::'

EDIT: Just got a chance to go there, here are the pictures for proof and use in your guide if you like ::'
