Lordjake
Some basic things are to be very polite and use proper language. Explain to the Senator why you are writing to him/her. Tell him/her why you wish to join the Navy, and your future plans after joining the Academy. If the chosen Senator was once enlisted in the military, that might help a bit because he/she probably would have written a Senator also, so they would relate to you better. When you end the letter, make sure to thank him for his time reading it. Thats all I can think of at the moment, I hope I helped.
lcandy
My advice would be to first off, make a good plan of exactly what you are going to say. Don't even bother writing a word until you have a full plan done. Research the person you are writing. Have they been in the forces, what achievments do they have? What do you know about this person thats relevant, do they have any passions concerning their job that you agree with or feel strongly about? You need to have a valid reason for writing to them, somthing honest and real. No need to write much on this, just make sure you have somthing. Throughout, try to use patriotic and passionate language, without going overboard or like you are making it up. Be true to yourself in what you write, about how you want to serve your country, how much it means to you. Maybe add in a little about your past, any reasons that made you choose this path. Then about the future, what you hope to achieve, what you hope to give your country. I would say at each point, you have to ask yourself, "why" and "is this really me?". Don't forget, this person doesn't have a clue who you are, so your words have to mean a lot. Avoid using words that overly descriptive, and of course, get people to check and double check your literacy. Don't be afraid of taking constructive criticsm from these people either! Finally, try to add in things you have achieved in your life already, things that you are proud of. Make yourself proud without sounding cocky or arrogant, and thats really a hard thing to do. Hope these ideas help :)
Bubsa
You're writing to a Senator about applying for the military? Christ, shouldn't be hard. Just use proper English (bound to impress them), wave all glory and I'd imagine you're in. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you. mad4u689
You might want to ask for advice on collegeconfidential.com, which is designed for people applying to various colleges and universities. The specific forum for the Naval Academy is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=89 and the forum for the air force academy is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=85 Everybody hug and spread the love :D

legola5
An important part of letters which many people seem to miss out on is being methodical and keeping to a decent structure. Also, a thesaurus can be your best friend and worst enemy; only use one if you find yourself repeating the same word, not to look more intelligent. Try to use full sentances and subordinate clauses rather than making it look like you threw water on the paper and put a comma everywhere a drop landed. Don't make it any longer than it has to be: the last thing you want is two paragraphs at the end trailing off about how you were lead in the Christmas nativity when you were four. Remember not to talk about this senator too much, it'll look like you're trying to fill the letter out or are just stalking him, you only need to show an interest and link relevant parts between his past and your future. snyper_freak
What's with this? :? Does every person who wants to join the Naval or Airforce Academy have to have a nomination from a Senator? That sounds stupid to me :? Wouldn't that just waste an awful lot of time for Senators if the tens of thousands who apply have to each ask for a nomination? Why don't they just let you go straight in? Can someone explain why this is? :P Rsn: snyper jr
magekillr
im not exactly sure...on why lol...i would imagine to weed out people quicker I do know that thousands of people receive nominations...and roughly 4-5 thousand receive an official nomination. around 2000 are then qualified scholastically and physically...around 1500 are given applications and interviews...and around 1200 of those original thousands are let in very very very grueling process...i don't have a very good shot...but what the hell ya know?
logic-is-overrated
Use big words and lie about how great he is. This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.

People who are simply too lazy to do the job right obviously aren't worth the school's time, and this weeds them out quickly. This brings up a good point, too: the senator doesn't have time to read 'em all. If you use proper english and talk straight and honest and to the point, you're going to get the reccomendation. They get enough of them that they have a whole system on how to answer them; my brother did it and I dont think it was a huge deal. I honestly don't think they are held to the same standards that a college application essay is. Not sayin you should rush it, just don't stress too much about it.
