I think I'd go hunting rather than attempt a fire in a blizzard, you'd be amazed at how you can kill things. I've heard this story of a guy who was out hunting, he was taking a break and had put down his rifle. Then suddenly he saw a moose running towards him, he then ran towards it yelling and bam, the moose died of a heart attack.

Story Time:

 

Several years ago the young Seany was a boy scout. Now our young bear loved the outdoors and always wondered what it would be like to be in a real survival situation. So at boy scout camp our intrepid young scout signed up for a wilderness survivor class(Note; I had taken one before and liked it). So our young bear built his shelter nice and dry and cozy, out of logs and sticks and leaves. Well that night, the young bear and some other scouts decide to build a fire. Fire is built. The young men all talk around the fire into the hours of the night before they decide to go to bed. At this point the young bear makes a crucial decision. He decides to put the fire out so as to not set the whole woods on fire. He does so. At this point he makes another critical decision, he decides not to sleep in the shelter. Our little Bear then, takes off his shoes, curls up in his fleece sleeping bag for the night and falls asleep. But not for long. That night, shortly after the young Bear went to sleep it rained. It was cold rain. It was wet rain. The young Bear awakes, shivering, literally so cold it woke him up. The bear looks to his shelter, only to see one of his buddies, taking up all the space. The Bear decides to suck it up, and goes back to sleep. About 15 minutes later the Bear again awakes. Again awoken by the shock of the cold, drenched sleeping bag. This time out young Bear has to go to the bathroom. So he sits up, reaches for his shoes, only to find them equally wet. So our young bear, shivering walks several yards and goes #1 by a tree, he then returns to his sleeping bag, slides in to the cocoon of ice and falls back asleep. Again, about 20 minutes later our young Bear has shivered himself awake, but this time he can't fall back asleep, and his young stomach has realized it is hungry, but of course he has no food. To paraphrase, the rest of the night went much teh same, the young bear can barely fall asleep and when he does, it is only for short periods. Well finally the sun is starting to rise. So everyone is getting up. The instructions go out to tear down your shelter so that the next class can't just use/repair them. Our young Bear will move for no man. His buddy who so rudely blocked him from the warmth and dryness of the shelter the night before says something along the lines of "Come on, you're not helping at all." The young Bear replies, through tremors and clattering teeth,"I'm too cold, I can't move." While in his mind our little hero is thinking, "WHAT THE [bleep]! I'M [bleep]ING DYING HERE AND YOU HAVE THE [bleep]ING NERVE TO TELL ME I'M NOT HELPING?!'. So everyone finishes and the Bear manages to clean his little pathetic nest up and go back to camp.

 

In retrospect, I realize I was actually probably on the verge of hypothermia. Not even exaggerating. But our little hero survived, to tell you this story and the moral,

 

Never, EVER put out the fire.

Bear is a my hero in my mind.

Never dry your shoes on the fire, some friends of mine did that while we were camping... I was the only one of us not walking home barefoot.

I can't even count the number of times I've dried my shoes on a fire.

Fire is pretty awesome.
