You can safe-spot the Bandos Avatar using Ranged (and presumably, Magic and a halberd) as long as you don't do it while standing beside him (he'll never approach you to melee you). In addition, you can't set up a Cannon during the fight.

Interestingly, you can do the Tears of Guthix during the quest (I had to wait 4 days to see if I could do this). This is useful if you're the kind of person who doesn't take the time to go there (like me; I did the Tears while I was in the area during the quest).

If you talk to the goblin standing around the statue made in your honor after completing this quest, you can have your pose changed. \
