Obviously you can't see it now, but behind the wood layer there's an image I'd like to make visible by putting a realistic hole in the wall. The best I've been able to come up with so far is a simple eraser job:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Obviously, it looks terrible. I'd like a few pointers on how to make a hole that looks like it's been punched out of the wall, with splintering and stuff. I've tried looking for a tutorial, but all search returns I get for 'hole' are either bullet holes or black holes.

Right now there are four layers: Background (solid black), eye, wood, tape. The tape and the eye layer have transparant parts.

K, now in what order are they? like, the tape should be on top, then eye, then wood(there is no need for a BG layer unless the eye is too small and needs coverage around it)

From top to bottom, it's tape, wood, eye, background. The background layer is there to fill up the transparant parts of the eye and the rest of the hole. I just made the hole by cutting into the wood layer with the eraser.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If they are like this then I it will be an "erasing" job, though there are many better ways to cut through the wood rather than using the eraser tool. Try using the Polygonal Lasso Tool, cut out an area, select your wood layer then press delete

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you want a more splintered look, then say so :D

Do you want it similar to that, its quick job by me but if you spend some exta it can look better. Its done by using the burn tool at different levels and the lasso tool to shift the peices of wood.
